About Yoshitaka Uchino : Yoshitaka Uchino, founder, recerived his Master of Architecture from The University of Tokyo, and Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Tokyo. He joined 'Tokyo Canal Project',collaborated on urban research, proposal on urban design, holding joint exhibition with several architects. His career as an architect started when he has become registered Architect in Japan in 2004,. While studying on 'Spaces of agoras and paths' in post-graduate cource of The University of Tokyo,he has designed houses, restaurants in Tokyo and Ibaraki. When he established Yoshitaka Uchino & YDS Architects, the practice opened the office in Chiyoda(Central Tokyo). Since then, the practice has designed several houses, residential buildings, kindergartens, offices, renovations in Tokyo,Chiba,Kumamoto and so on. In 2016,he has been awarded'Design Top10 Award for Emergent Architect in the world' as the only Japanese from BUILD,UK. In the same year,he has been awarded Excellence and Nominated for 'SIA-GETZ Architecture Prize for Emergent Architecture in Asia' from Singapore Institute of Architects as the only Japanese. Now their projects are in overseas as well as in Japan.
STATEMENT OF ART:
YDS Architects think that architectures and cities should be beautiful and functional. The practice always keep in mind natural factors such as light, wind, and rain. YDS Architects aim to create a beautiful spaces with nature where people feel the transition of light and shadow.
To question the interrelationship between architecture and nature is to rethink human life within architectures. They always think about how people interact with nature, and they mostly insert terraces into the whole volume. The first house which the practice designs with this concept is ‘House I’ where various light and wind go through through the inserted terrace. The terrace is like a ‘Box of the Light’. By developing the concept of voids, they pursue to design houses including ‘Y-House’ and ‘House K’.
On designing apartments, the practice consider the meaning of ‘living together’, and try to connect housings with cities by making public spaces like agoras and paths. Spaces of plaza play a significantly important role in Western cities, and these kind of spaces of paths or rojis are one of the important Asian architectural spaces. By referring to these historic spaces the practice designs bountiful and vigorous spaces of plazas and paths in apartments.
The practice considers apartments are like small cities for residents, therefore they always design spaces where residents could meet and enjoy with each other. Creating agoras with trees where people feel nature such as light, wind, air, and rain is one of their solutions. By realizing architectures one by one, they intend to stimulate cities and invoke communications between architectures and cities.
Voids are very important elements of architectures, therefore the practice continue to pursue dramatic spaces by designing voids,to seek to create inner and outer voids as efficiently as possible. This way of architectural concept inspires them by the works of Le Corbusier and Tadao Ando.
In ‘Solaia apartment’ , the main concept is to take in the beautiful nature around the site. A new collective form with natural public spaces while dealing with the strict regulations of scenic districts is the intention. Placing a court and softly articulated it from the trees nearby by louvers is another architectural solution concerning voids and nature. This court functions as an agora for residents. Stairs placed in the court functions as a three-dimensional street. Overlapping the street over the court, their aim is to invoke communication in the open air space between the residents.
The practice usually use simple geometric forms like circles, squares, and uniform grids.By employing simple geometry as a methodology, order of spaces would come into being.Simple concept of voids and spaces of plazas and streets while taking in nature would make spaces beautiful and comfortable to live in. Based upon five factors below, the practice designs architectures and cities.
1. Nature:Light and Wind
2. MA,Void
3. Spaces of Agora
4. Spaces of Path(Roji)
5. Symbiosis:Environment and History
By employing simple geometry as a methodology, they pursue to integrate East and West. Simple concept of designing voids and spaces of plazas and paths would make spaces of architectures beautiful and comfortable to live in.
