DESIGN NAME: Solaia Apartment
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Apartment
INSPIRATION: The client wants to have an apartment with concept which would not fade with time passes.Living with nature and feeling light around the court is the main theme of this housing. The transitional changes of light and shadow are one of the characteristic images of Japanese architecture. The court paved by natural slate come from the images traditional Japanese temples. The image of the corridors around the court filled with beautiful light is inspired by the experiences of churches in the West.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 5-story housing is built in the site next to a big park. Taking in the beautiful nature around the site was the theme.I placed a court softly articulated it from the trees nearby by louvers. This court functions as a plaza, and stairs in the court functions as a street. My aim was to invoke communication in the open air space with light and wind between the residents.
This was an attempt to create an environment where living spaces smoothly expand from every units to the public spaces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Among the units, two of them directly face the court, so these two units are like a house within an apartment. To reach the these two units, one will approach via the court and go outside after entering the entrance hall in these two units. Living in these units, you will be able to get the nature which is might be lost in our life in apartments. Getting natural light and wind results in a better living and environment and adds new values to the apartment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design started in April 2011 and finished in March 2012 in Tokyo. Construction started in April 2012 and finished in February 2013 in Tokyo.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To realize calmness and natural beauty in the court, this court is paved by natural slate, and the stair is made up of exposed concrete. Fading of these natural materials with time would remind us of time transition. At the center of the court, there is a bamboo. By this bamboo, I want to take in the natural trees around the site. The louvers around the court is alminum. By using natural and artificial materials in this small universe, I want to synthesize architecture and nature.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: By referring to the western plaza, I want to design plazas and streets where people stay with joy feeling nature. By combining these public spaces, I want to create vigorous spaces. Overlapping the street over the court, my aim is to invoke communication in the open air space between the residents.Making use of the context of the site, bamboos have been planted in the court.
By employing several experiences in public spaces,I pursue to design a new collective form of natural public spaces within residential apartments.
CHALLENGE: Due to the evacuation,we need to design a door in the louvers. To make the court smoothly connect the nature nearby,we want to make it as plane as possible and decided to combine louvers and the door. Thus,we designed a door by the same louvers. We made the frames of the louvers as much thin as possible. Expanding the city into the housing, we designed a frame of glass with post in the hall by thin steel frames. This glass functions as a node between the housing and the city.
