DESIGN NAME: Lounge of Books Residence
PRIMARY FUNCTION: House
INSPIRATION: Rethinking about bookshelves and treating them as walls as well as boxes for books is the main theme of this project. YDS Architects creates the spaces covered by books which are inspired by works such as Phillips Exeter Academy by Louis Kahn. To make use of the old existing structures and create new architectural factors, designing co-existences, collisions, conversations between old and new are pursued. This reminds us of the way of using old materials in the West, especially Italy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a renovation and extension project of a house. The owner want to have rooms for their children by covering the void within. The design theme is to make contrasts by creating new bookshelves to accomodate lots of books within the old wood structure.
YDS Architects designe bookshelves by which child's rooms and study room are divided. The old wood structure being left as it is, the collision between the old and new stimulates the spaces. They would live in a book lounge being surrounded by many books.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To make the differences between the old and new structures clear, there are no doors in child rooms.Making use of the existing beams, no walls between child rooms and study rooms. There are only the bookshelves and the old wood structures.Entering the hole dug in the bookshelves, there is also bookshelves whose form is the same one of cut volume.New relationship and symbiosis between books and structures are intended.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design started in May 2012 and finished in August 2012 in Tokyo. Construction started in August 2012 and finished in October 2012 in Tokyo.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main image is softly articulating child’s rooms and study room by books itself. To clearly express the old and new materials, the practice painted the bookshelves in white and the wood structures in clear. The diagonal beams of old structures were on the way of making bookshelves, so putting them next to the beam is the solution. Taking advantage of this downsides, we succeeded in designing the spaces of communication between old and new materials and stimulated by the old and new spaces.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The collision and communication between the old and new is the theme. Refering to the use of the materials of Castelvecchio by Carlo Scarpa,Fabbrica Benetton Communication Research Center by Tadao Ando, the practice aims to design spaces making the best use of the given contexts. Although this project is much smaller than these projects, the way of making use of materials and inserting new spaces into the old ones is very stimulating.
CHALLENGE: Taking advantage of the old wood structures is the biggest issue of this project. To use the best of the spaces,YDS Architects investigates to break the parts of the old structures and build new wood structures.Considering feelings of the old materials and the inheritance of the history of this house, the practice left the old woods as it was. Although the structures are on the way of the new spaces and bookshelves, creating the collision between the old and new is intended.
