DESIGN NAME: White Terrace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: House
INSPIRATION: Living with nature is the main theme of this house. The demand from the client was simple. They asked a house in which they would feel nature and various spaces are connected each other. The terrace next to the living room and the corridors functions as a plaza and like a space of ‘Engawa’, semi-outdoor spaces, which is a typical Japanese space. This terrace plays a role of a central space for daily life.Inserted terrace functions as a plaza which inspires me by western plazas.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design image was interaction between inner spaces and outer spaces. The outer space inserts into the architecture, so that light and wind brought from the outer space will extend into the inner space.Inner space and outer space would integrates.
There are three voids through which various lights and shadows will go into the spaces and people feel the transition of light and shadow. This was an attempt to design light within white rooms by making various inner voids and inserted outer voids.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: From the living rooms and corridors around the terrace, people could feel light and wind. The terrace covered by FRP grating half public and half private space, and it is like an outside livingroom. The FRP grating functions as a screen between the house and the city. From the terrace, they would see the sky and enjoy staying there interacting with nature.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design started in April 2011 and finished in August 2011 in Ibaraki,Japan. Construction started in September2011 and finished in March 2012 in Ibaraki,Japan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To realize the simple volume, we used flat sidings with dark blue and white jolipat. These materials are the most beautiful materials in Japan. To make the terrace a space with privacy where they would enjoy with no care to the outer spaces, the terrace was covered with the grating of square lattice FRP.This light green material shines brightly and the squared shadow from it reminds us the transitional changes of light when they are lit up by the sun.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: By referring to the western plazas and streets often found in several cities,we always design plazas and streets where people would stay with joy feeling nature. The two-stories terrace inserted into the house is the central space. We intended to design the corridors around the terrace and make them relate to the void. These spaces stimulating with each other, architectural symbiosis came into being. By employing simple spatial forms as a methodology,I pursue to integrate East and West.
CHALLENGE: To realize the semi openness of the terrace,I intended to cover it by ambient wall. After I searched for several materials,I decided to use squared lattice FRP.This material is usually used for grating, nevertheless I think it would vaguely articulate the terrace from the outside and they would shine brightly by light. The square form of the lattice relates to the white square tile which paved the terrace. The durability of it is very good and they are easily connected to the outside walls.
