| DESIGN NAME: Shift PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chest of drawers INSPIRATION: Shift is a chest of drawers as well as an object. The tilted outline of the rombohedron shape suggests instability while the marquetry bands seem to bind the structure together like belts. The combination of Maple and African Ebony veneer with their strong optical contrast enhance the appearance of the design. High quality materials and outstanding craftsmanship emphasize the high-end appearance. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shift is a chest of drawers based on the shape of a rhombohedron. The dynamic geometric shape of the creation is complemented by the seemingly random design of its marketry bands, which give the impression of holding together the construction and hindering it from falling apart. Shift is an object beyond pure function with high quality craftsmanship. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Shift can be used as a normal chest of drawers. It can be free standing given the marquetry decoration on all sides or can be placed by a wall. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in Geneva in Mai 2015 and finished in the same location in December of the same year. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The structure of Shift is based on a wood assembly. Flamed maple veneer and marquetry bands made from African ebony cover the structure on the inside and outside. A proprietary marquetry technique allows for a particularly accurate fit of the ebony bands. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: W x H X D : 190cm x 72 cm x 72 cm TAGS: ArteNemus, Shift, chest of drawers, rhombohedron, maple, ebony RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Among watch collectors, handcrafted watches with cloisonne enamel dials are sought after for their sophisticated aesthetics or for their mechanical complexity despite their limited practical use. Regarding Shift, the plan is to transpose the concept of decorative watches into the domain art furniture combining an aesthetic exterior appearance combined with contemporary marquetry and high-level craftsmanship. This specific approach to marquetry has attracted some significant interest. CHALLENGE: The first design challenge was to create an aesthetically pleasing rhombohedron and at the same time a functional chest of drawers. The second design challenge was to add an aesthetic tension to the design through the placement of the different ebony bands.
