Interview with Eckhard Beger at Wednesday 20th of April 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? EB: The main objective of the project was to create a chest of drawers Shift with the unusual shape of a rhombohedron. Shift is an aesthetic object before being a chest of drawers. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? EB: The main focus was to combine the seemingly unstable shape of the rhombohedron with the black ebony marquetry bands which like belts imply stability. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? EB: The project duration was 6 months starting in Mai 2015 FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? EB: The design was made following my own inspiration FS: What made you design this particular type of work? EB: I wanted to design a chest of drawers with a geometry that is out of the ordinary but which at the same time has a functional side. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? EB: The target customer is someone looking for a piece of residential furniture which is at the same time an aesthetic object with a high-end finish and a functional piece of furniture. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? EB: The name Shift, reflects the geometry of the chest of drawers. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? EB: A special manufacturing process is required to combine the ebony bands with the flamed maple veneer.
