About Allan Toh : I am a designer, thinker, and observer. As an individual, I enjoy people watching and observing how things are done in different cultures and by different people. I always believe that everyone is unique. Family, environment, culture, time and experiences shapes our perspectives and actions. So I find it extremely intriguing to observe. STATEMENT OF ART:My view that everyone is unique shapes my attitude as a designer. Because design is supposed to solve problems, it is only successful if relevant to the stakeholders - end users and business. I always start each design by understanding the requirements by listening to the stakeholders. This helps me identify conscious and subconsious needs so I can offer useful solutions to their problems. In terms of credentials, I have over ten years of experience in graphic design and illustration, managing end-to-end design projects for business clients. I have pitched, secured, and delivered design products for >10 business clients as Creative Director and Studio Owner, including corporates (SATS Ltd) and small- and medium-sized enterprises (Le Rainbow Catering, Musical Touch). During my past experience as a visual merchandising designer in Clinique, I have also successfully implemented multiple designs in retail stores across Singapore and localized them across 6 Asia-Pacific markets. I am currently moving on to explore and understand the field of user experience design. I think design is meant to solve problems, while Art is a form of expression that opens up perspectives. For Design, there is a technicality to it. There are strategies, methodologies, and sometimes, systems to help address issues in our daily lives. It is a more tangible form of a creative solution to problems, and it can be scaled or recreated more efficiently if done well. This is applicable across different disciplines in design- from visual communications, industrial design, digital & print designs to customer & user experience design. In every field, design aims to solve issues and often can be tested and measured. For Art, there is less technicality. There are skills and styles, but they all revolve around the purpose of highlighting societal issues. They use visuals and crafts to bring social, cultural, or even political issues to the public for discussion, evaluation, and learning. Art is less tangible and is very subjective. It can be profound and stimulating and helps in shaping the way we think and evolve in our mindset and perspectives.
