DESIGN NAME: Yorkville - The Ring
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mixed-Use Shopping Mall
INSPIRATION: Yorkville The Ring combines organic nature and the joy of shopping to create an unprecedented experience. It brings the beauty of nature, the joy of enriched social communication and fun shopping experiences together with a new intelligent commercial system that encourages customers to enjoy healthy and diversified lifestyles. A 42-metre-tall botanic garden along the main atrium features three distinct themes – the Soul Tree, the Aerial Forest and the Riverside Hills.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Yorkville The Ring is Hongkong Land’s first wholly owned commercial development project in Southwestern China. The 420,000 sqm mixed-use development will occupy a 170,000 sqm shopping mall, a 110,000 sqm super grade A office building and a 70,000 sqm, six-storeys and 42 metres tall indoor botanical garden. The shopping mall also includes an all-new intelligent commercial system which helps bring together people and nature, people and people, and people and technology.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The significant feature of the design is the innovative modular design of the facade through parametric modelling. Different materials were used to illustrate the abstract theme inspired by the poetic scenery of “wind”, “woods” and “clouds”. Curvatures of the ceramic tiles mimic the breeze of the wind, while the texture of aluminium panels subtly hints various elements from the mountains. Moreover, the use of LED lighting adds glamour and magnificence, animating and breathing life into the facade.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project site is located in Yubei District, next to Jinzhou Avenue and Caihu Road, Chongqing, China. The project expected to be completed in December 2020

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: TOWER A and TOWER B have been prequalified with LEED Gold Certification.
1. Natural ventilation and shading CFD technology is used to provide technical support for simulation of air distribution, optimization of temperature distribution and utilization of natural ventilation in the botanical garden. The application of illuminance analysis technology provides technical basis for plant distribution, natural and artificial fill-in light.
2. Thermostatic heating DEST annual load and energy consumption simulation technology is applied to assist and optimize the design of energy center of air-conditioning system and power transmission and distribution system.
3. BIM technology application is involved in all majors of the project.
4. The shopping mall roof is equipped with equipment mezzanine floor. Through innovative measures such as roof duct transfer, louver ventilation rate optimization and multi-layer stacking of equipment, So as to free up more spaces for a clean commerical and landscape area on the roof top.

CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge for the PHA design team is to realise a seamless integration of urban living with the beauty of nature in order to create a “urban + nature” hybrid form of community. The retail circulation permeates and interplays with that of the indoor botanical garden, successfully merging the multi-dimensional (both horizontally and vertically) spaces of the two, bringing a nature-infused commercial retail experience to the customers. A 42m-tall dome crowns the top of the large-scale botanical garden, sheltering open-style shopfronts knitted into multi-level terraces of greenery. Through sightline considerations and meticulous spatial planning, the botanical garden landscape visually extends and reaches beyond. Above the main entrance in the southeast, Through the movement of floorslab, the sightlines of the double-storey green retail space and the botanical garden echoes from within, while the vast curtain walls showcase the nature design theme, inviting traffic from the outside.
