DESIGN NAME: Pilotis
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: The concept for the Pilotis Residence came from a dialogue with the topography. With the topographical challenge incorporated as a part of the project, the programs/functions were separated in distinct volumes to set them in the best location to maximize the integration and flow between the spaces spread by the topography. Which final form results in a visual that reminds concrete blocks overlapped and floating over pilotis.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Pilotis Residence lies over a site with severe topographical challenges in which the project embraces and comes up with intriguing solutions. In total the house is split in four different levels, according to their functions as so in construction volumes that are composed in a way giving a sense of lightness over the pilotis.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The access to the house is given by the garage and social entrance, both set in the street level, through a large external stair or by an internal stair and elevator. The main ground floor, where the family gathers, is an open space fully integrated into the garden, terrace and pool through the transparency of sliding glass panels. The sculptural staircase in the foyer connects the main to the upper floor, where the bedrooms and home theater are. On the top floor, the roof garden and deck offer a quiet place to rest and an amusing city view.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Located in a residential neighborhood in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The project concept and detailed design drawings took six months, and the construction finished in two years.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The construction system used is concrete for a flexible and opened floor plan with few pilotis, and glass panels for transparency.
The wood along with the concrete gives a warm feel and ties up the architectural language.
The rooftop garden works as an ecological resource reducing the heat transmitted to the structure. Other ecological solutions were implemented such as photovoltaic power, rainwater recycle, energy control system and implementation of recycled materials.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: In a site 40 by 15 meters, the Pilotis residence has 700 square meters, distributed in 4 different levels. This distribution was carefully planned accordingly to the topographic circumstances.
Having the main floor above the street level and a majestic staircase to lead to this floor, it has a security function and also gives more privacy to the residents.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main research goal was to find a solution for houses that has more than 2 levels and how the project is aware in giving a solution for the integration and the flow of the whole house. Also the research of the constructive aspects and the finishing materials were done very carefully to not damage the architectural language given by the volumes joined.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was to accommodate all the programs in such a steep terrain, fitting necessities, providing comfort, practicality and privacy. Therefore, the project was distributed in four levels, creating a plateau where all social activities could be held, accessed from the entrance, at street level, by a large outdoor staircase that leads to the strategically positioned High ceiling foyer that connects the whole house.
The glass-encased main living space, facing the backyard for privacy, brings natural light and the garden to the inside.
