| DESIGN NAME: The Thinker PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster INSPIRATION: In a male dominated intellectual field, people of colour, especially women, are not represented equally. The project is supposed to make people think at a second glance as it represents societal discrimination based on race, sex, gender, disabilities. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is a provocative reflection on Rodins The Thinker, challenging the white supreme masculine vision of artistic perfection and intellectual grandiosity. It shows the face of a woman of colour with a double chin and an unconventional nose. Her head is held by the hand of a white man and used as a flowerpot. It is a still life in which her existence seems to be arranged and rearranged by other peoples ideas. At first sight the image appears to be very pleasant and beautiful but once one understands the context it becomes irritating and disturbing. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This project was developed as a motif for print products. The advantage of the digital production is the versatile applicability in different print areas. As the selection of mockups shows, the project is suitable for outdoor use, as an indoor poster, but also for publication in magazines, or as a book cover. The goal of this work is the far-reaching visibility of the illustration in different media spaces. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The poster was created in Summer 2018 in Vienna. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This Poster was entirely created digitally with Procreate on iPad Pro. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Procreate, digital Image, original dimension: 29,7 x 42cm, 300dpi, rgb TAGS: head, flower pot, hand, woman, still life RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research in this particular case has begun with a cinematic exploration of racism in film. The great interest in arthouse film productions often become an important inspiration. Black women are hardly represented in the visual arts. The allusion to the thinker of Rodin in connection with the motive of a severed head in the hand of a white man, is to show the brutality and self-evidentness of the male-cantered thinking in science and art. CHALLENGE: It was a challenge to put the playfulness of the motive in context with the theme of racism. As a privileged white woman it is difficult to address the issue of racism without being maternalistic or even tasteless. Nevertheless, it is important to be aware of this asymmetry and to question it. In the attached video the head of a female white model is painted black and transformed. What unifies women is centuries of invisibility in certain cultural and intellectual spaces. NAME: Miriam Trilety PROFILE: Miriam Trilety is an artist, illustrator and psychotherapist. This diverse background merges in an extraordinary approach to arts and design, as her work shows a slightly odd habit of constantly observing and questioning everything in a quite ironical and satirical manner. She offers graphic and communication design for individuals as well as companies. Among her clients are the University of Vienna, the Austrian Academy of Sciences and several artists and musicians. In 2013 a collection of anecdotes by the physicist Walter Thirring were published by Seifert Publishing with illustrations by Miriam Trilety. In January 2015 she developed the corporate Design and illustrations for the Association for Aesthetics and Applied Cultural Theory in Vienna. Moreover Miriam Trilety is a lecturer for Illustration at Zeichenfabrik (Training Institute for Visual Arts) in Vienna, Austria. |
