| DESIGN NAME: It's a Tiny Little World PRIMARY FUNCTION: Kids Illustration INSPIRATION: The inspiration behind these paper pieces is the variety of patterns, textures, and colors found in different cultures around the world. Each scene depicts the wildlife found in these nations. Having been born in a very colorful and diverse country, Nathanna is fascinated by the craftsmanship of items from countries like Morocco, India, China, Peru, and the many nations of the African continent. All this made her want to try her hand at creating art that celebrates diversity. It is a tiny little world indeed. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This set of illustrations was made using a mixture of paper-cutting techniques and some final touches of digital media, which makes it distinctive from other illustrations. The paper pieces were hand-painted with gouache and the use of vibrant colors and different shapes were essential to achieving the goal of paying homage to these cultures and their traditions. The use of mixed media, especially paper, gives the illustration a sense of it being 3D, because of the shadows created by the many layers with which the artwork is made. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This design will be used on products of The Art of Nathanna Erica brand, like clothing and accessories. It was designed to be used in a variety of products, as a way to raise awareness to the importance of celebrating the many beautiful cultures and nations around the world. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was developed between the years of 2017 and 2018, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It started in July 2017 and finished in February 2018. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This illustration was made with paper-cutting techniques and hand-painted with gouache. They were cut with nothing more than a pair of scissors. It's made of different kinds and brands of paper. It started with reference research before the initial sketches. The second part was sketching some ideas and then copying the graphite sketch to the papers used for the creation of the artwork. After that, it is necessary to put the pieces together, like a puzzle, in order to create the 3D effect of these illustrations. Once the art is finished, it is ready to be photographed and printed. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The original artwork measures about 1180 mm X 250 mm. TAGS: World Culture, Kids Illustration, Cartoon, Cartooning, Paper Art RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The type of research was descriptive and it focused on the many different kinds of patterns found in Latin, African and Oriental cultures and the particularly intricate craftsmanship of the cloths, mosaics, woodwork, ceramics and overall architecture of these societies, which was the inspiration for the artwork. The methodology used was observation and the study of many pictures compiled for reference. CHALLENGE: The main creative challenge encountered during the creation of these illustrations was the need to be respectful to the nations depicted and to accurately represent their traditions, their symbols and patterns without making them look stereotypical.
