| DESIGN NAME: Shapeshifting Cat PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cat INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from my love of big cats and adventure. When I was a child, my sister and I would spend so much time together and as I got older I realized that certain things change. In my mind, I am free to adventure with big cats, my sister who is reflected with the brother, and myself as the sister. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The illustrations tell a story about an adventuring brother and sister in the unknown. While on the adventure they come across a shapeshifting cat which guides them in the world. The world that exists within the illustrations is an extension of everyday life, it is not perfect. The strengths of these designs come across in the delicacy and finesse of the lines and the print itself. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The interaction with the illustrations happens with the senses one feels, thinks, sees, and observes. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2017 and finished in September 2017, and was selected and displayed at Bologna Children's Book Fair 2018. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The illustrations were produced using an aluminum plate, then by drawing an image directly onto the printing element using specialized pencils. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Image #1: 110mm x 160mm Image #2: 110mm x 160mm Image #3: 110mm x 160mm Image #4: 160mm x 110mm Image #5: 160mm x 110mm TAGS: Lithograph, Cat, Printmaking, Pencil, Storytelling, Art, Adventure RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In order to draw the best illustrations, I researched many different breeds of cats and focused on the paper to determine the beauty of the print. CHALLENGE: The challenge I set for myself was to make the cat ambiguous, perfect, and extremely cute. For that reason, the hardest part of the design activity was trying to grasp the idea behind the creation of a cat which I believe my illustrations reflect my understanding. NAME: Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2018 PROFILE: The Bologna Children's Book Fair or La fiera del libro per ragazzi is the leading professional fair for children's books in the world. The Entrance to The Bologna Children's Book Fair in 2008 Since 1963, it is held yearly for four days in March or April in Bologna, Italy. It is the meeting place for all professionals involved with creating and publishing children's books, and is mainly used for the buying and selling of rights, both for translations and for derived products like movies or animated series. It is also the event where a number of major awards are given, the BolognaRagazzi Awards, in four categories (Fiction, Non-fiction, New Horizons (for the non-Western world) and Opera Prima (for first works). During the fair, but separate from it, some major awards are announced, including the biannual Hans Christian Andersen Awards and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. |
