| DESIGN NAME: Chinese Papercutting PRIMARY FUNCTION: Typeface INSPIRATION: With it's long history and elegant technique, the Chinese paper-cutting is treasured for it's highly artistic and practical appeal. Featured China Red, the red Chinese paper-cutting is a symbol of joy and happiness. Being a Chinese designer based in New York, I am so attracted to the exquisite elegance of traditional Chinese paper cuttings. I am proud of my own culture and enjoyed every process of this project. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Project includes a set of Typeface design, and a book of each letters with each exquisite Chinese traditional element patterns. All patterns were hand made and translated into digital illustration. Each kind of elements with delicate Chinese style of impressionistic are added into 26 English letters. Decorated with Chinese elements, the letters shows exquisite elegance and luxuriant cultural implication of China. The Chinese paper cutting Typeface Design was selected and published in the book series, Oriental Motifs in Modern Design by SendPoints Publishing Co., Ltd. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With all the visual concepts in mind, and with all the digital element patterns are done in illustrator, an experimental typeface set started to developed, where each letter is made out of the combination of the traditional Chinese element, bringing all the inspirations together and creating a unique, delicate Chinese style of impressionistic, which shows exquisite elegance and luxuriant cultural implication of China to be applied throughout the entire brand visual materials and communication. A visually-pleasant design with the cultural background story is a best way to express and share the exquisite beauty of Chinese culture PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea of the project began to conceive in early 2017, with all the traveling and researching back at Asia China, the typeface is formally designed in mid 2017, and the finished production including book design in early February, 2018, at New York, US. The Chinese paper cutting Typeface Design was selected and published in the book series, Oriental Motifs in Modern Design by SendPoints Publishing Co., Ltd. at 2017. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After researching for the traditional Chinese elements, I translated and drew the digital patterns in Adobe Illustrator, then combine the 26 letters shape with the patterns in Illustrator. After the typeface are done, I edited and made the book with Adobe InDesign. Then made the application with photography and Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom CC. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Digital illustration, outdoor posting and network communication. 8in x 8 in book. TAGS: Typeface Design, Book Design, Illustration, Graphic design, Chinese Elements RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research included traveling back to China and visiting multiple cities, people & their families, learning about the authentic traditional Chinese Paper-cutting patterns. Learning about how Chinese people are thinking about the traditional paper-cutting and why each elements are so exquisite and made such luxuriant cultural implication of China. Learning about the exquisite China Red, knowing that the China Red was coming from the celebration of the Chinese New Year, it's the most symbolic color of China. CHALLENGE: The challenge of this project is to keep the authenticity of the traditional Chinese paper-cutting and visually pleasant while combing with the 26 letters as a typeface set. During the process, I also learned to make the traditional paper-cutting and hand drew & translate each exquisite element patterns into digital patterns, which is a fun challenge to my experience.
