DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: Fling
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Logo and VI
INSPIRATION: The logo has a totally custom script typeface to represent the uniqueness of personality. Personality was key to reflecting of the users of the app, each having their own reason and perspective when sending a message (Fling), this also gives the word mark a personality of its own. The script lettering injects youthfulness and attitude, with the connection of letters representing social connection and the journey of a message (Fling). The slanted text gives an instant injection of energy/dynamism.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Fling is a young start-up with big ideas for disrupting the social media industry by providing users with a gateway into other people's lives. This is done by creating the first truly random social media app that allows anyone from anywhere to connect with anyone from anywhere and share their moments. In 12 months Fling had grown to 4.5 million users and the founders thought it was time to reinvent the app's image.
The previous logo lacked character, looked static and failed to represent the app.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Logo is primarily featured in the apps on boarding screens. The script lettering, with the connection of letters enabled the logo to be playfully animated with the paper plane, spelling out the letters.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2015 in London and finished in June 2015 in London.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The logo has a totally custom script, handwritten typeface to represent the uniqueness of personality. This also playfully depicts the journey of the message (paper plane/Fling).
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Logo is primarily featured in the apps on-boarding screens, for both iOS and android.
TAGS: logo, branding, script, app, identity
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The logo has a totally custom script typeface, resulting in extensive handwriting, script research. Secondly, plane trail visualisation and patterns as an essential aspect of the re-design was to retain the instantly recognisable paper plane, a symbol that epitomises the fun, free brand aspect, integral to Flings identity.
CHALLENGE: Creating a free, fluid script typeface as well as ensuring that the logo remained visually balanced, consistent, to enable positioning of the brand on the current and future social media landscape.

Fling's logo and VI is a stunning example of how a logo can be used to communicate a brand's personality, while also conveying a sense of fun and dynamism. I was absolutely mesmerized by the design of the logo and VI for the "Fling" project. The custom script typeface immediately conveys the individual personalities of the users of the app, each with their own reason and perspective for sending a message. The connection of the letters speaks to the social connection and journey of the message. The slanted text gives the design an energetic and dynamic flair. The design perfectly captures the purpose and intent of the app. It was truly inspiring to see this work receive the A' Design Award and I couldn't be happier for the designer!

I'm so impressed with Steve Roberts's work on Fling! The custom script typeface truly captures the personality of the users of the app, and the connection of the letters represents the social connection between them. The slanted text gives the logo an injection of energy and dynamism, while still retaining the recognisable paper plane symbol which epitomises the fun and free brand aspect. The extensive handwriting and script research that went into the design really shows in the final product, and it's no wonder Fling has grown to 4.5 million users in 12 months! It's really inspiring to see such successful work and I'm so glad Steve Roberts has been recognised with the A' Design Award.
