DESIGN NAME: Plethora-Monument of Mass Customization
PRIMARY FUNCTION: 3D Printed Sculpture
INSPIRATION: Fascinated by the idea to experiment the formal complexity CAD and 3D-printing bring to design and manufacture, and inspired by the beauty of ornaments from classical architecture, Plethora is our manifesto of the Age of Mass Customization:
1.Micro to Macro Scales –infinite details without added cost
2.Parametric Ornamentalism –from classical to deconstructive, parametric and fractal forms
3.Spatial Illustration –3D drawing
4.Fluid Space – Integration of function and form
5.Concept Fabrication
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Plethora is the first large-scale 3D printed metal sculpture signifies the peak of form and ornament. It seeks balance between parametric algorithm and synthetic forms of illustration. The use of digital fabrication tools breaks the barrier between design and manufacture. Its reflective surfaces and complex geometry intriguingly catch light from all directions, and its monumental scale creates interaction with people and environment. It manifests the evolvement of the Age of Mass Customization.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Plethora is a monumental piece of sculpture:
At massing scale, smaller details cannot be fully appreciated while interaction with light adds a layer of intricacy and mystery.
At human scale, spectators can observe its anatomy - massing is divided by vertical snake-like waves and surfaces are tessellated into cells and pixels; micro details start to reveal.
At micro scale, the finest details of Plethora create an intriguing micro dynamics, an aesthetic opportunity has ever been missed before.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 1.1.2016 in Toronto and finished in 2017. It is exhibiting in Shanghai.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 1.Considered in concept design how Plethora would perform as spectators approach from different distances: massing scale, human scale, and micro scale
2.Developed a cross-platform method using digital tools to work with subdivision geometries (massing modeling) and penalization of detail components (‘snakes’, figures, and medallions)
3.Fine tuned parameters ready for 3D Printing
4.3D printed Plethora by LuxMea’s patent pending technology for large scale in metal, which was impossible before

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Researched digital modeling and fabrication technologies such as CNC, robotic arms, and 3D printing technologies including DMLS, etc.
Extensive research has been done online, by phone interviews & onsite visits to technology facilities; and intensive iteration of experiments was practiced to reach reliable technical stability.
Developed flawless cross-platform digital modeling method that brought new potentials in design and made large scale metal 3D printing feasible first time in history.
CHALLENGE: Technical realization was the most challenging part. None of the existing methods would produce Plethora. We ultimately developed our patent-pending technology that solved large-scale metal 3D printing for the first time in history.
Create a design with tremendous details that would have people’s resonance was challenging. Since industrial revolution, people are in status quo of accepting minimalism-"Ornament is crime" while Plethora resembles our aesthetic believe - the return of complex form.
