DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The Power of the Paperback

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Paper Crafted Sculptures

INSPIRATION:
What is your all time favourite book? ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell was my first literature love affair because a little bit of politics is easily digested when set in a farmyard. I moved house a few months ago and spent most of that time waiting for the internet to be connected. This led me to rediscover a love for reading books.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Paper is a difficult medium to work with, I wanted to challenge myself with a passion project using paper craft to elevate my favourite stories into surreal and imaginative works of art.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
I wanted to depict the story inside the book using paper craft elements representing moments in the stories.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in August 2016 and finished in September 2016

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Arts, Crafts and Ready-Made Design

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Paper is a very difficult medium to work with. The creation of these sculptures involves weeks worth of trial and error; from concept development, researching the chosen object and building various rough templates until the desired look is achieved.

CHALLENGE:
This project presented many challenges due to the nature of paper-craft. I had to create intricate, 3-D paper models that were either free-standing or could be hoisted into place but wherever possible I wanted the photos to be re-touched as little as possible. The ideas were key for each piece. I had to develop a concept that captured the ideology of each book I was representing.
