DESIGN NAME: Cubix
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stationery set
INSPIRATION: I always derive inspiration primarily from the very problem which we need to solve in the design process. I like simple, functional and clever design solutions. Often I am guided by one of the ten principles of Dieter Rams "Good design - is as little design as possible".
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Assembled stationery set has a shape of cube and consist of three parts - box for paper clips, box for stickers and pens holder. The main element of this set is pens holder. Thanks to the transparent plastic of two external parts of Cubix all attention is focused on the main element. Due to elasticity of the red rods almost anything that scattered all over the table can be inserted into this pens holder at any angle, from pens and pencils all of the sizes to paper and stickers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Every Cubix detail has an unique function, but it does not restrict their use. A small box is created for clips, but you can put anything inside, any trifle. Large box is designed for the stickers, but you can use it by one's own way. Likewise with pencil holder. Flexible rods of pencils holder allow inserting to it whatever you want. Furthermore, each component of Cubix can interact with another. You'd never ask "How it works?". You just disassemble Cubix into the three parts and use it.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2010 in Yekaterinburg, RUSSIA and finished in November 2011 in Guangzhou, CHINA. It was awarded in DESIGN & DESIGN INTERNATIONAL AWARD 2012 and published in such websites as Tuvie etc.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Still at the stage of design brief both I and my client decided to create something that can be presented as a "Form of Function". Therefore, in all subsequent studies, the question of functionality was in the first place. First of all, I performed a detailed analysis of existing analogues. Special attention was given to the method of empathic research. I was making a lot of models and was offering to my students at USAAA to use these models according to their intended purpose. As a result of these experiments and observations, we were able to create not just a predictable user experience, but the design which is allowing the user to interpret this experience differently.
CHALLENGE: The most complicated in this project was the technical part. The rods shape of pens holder was very difficult to manufacture by injection molding. These rods are too thin and long. It was difficult to find such composition of silicone, which couldn't be torn during manufacture (at the time of unlocking the mold). We spent a lot of time to achieve this. We were forced to make a lot of experimentation with materials. It was complicated but very interesting.
