DESIGN NAME: Semi Opened
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: The idea of the project was to create still harsh unchangeable monolith, referring to rocks scattered in the region, which is constantly being complemented by the surrounding nature. The pictures around the house change in the rhythm of seasons, weather conditions, day and night cycles. Therefore the house interiors are flexibly exposed to the influence of the surrounding environment and adopt nature decorations through spacious windows and skylights. Images change cyclically.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Semi Opened House is the answer to the changes that appeared around the investors' plot. The place was changed by the local developer, who cut down part of the forest to build the housing estate. Our task was to design a house that would be closed from the front and open to the private forest. A house that would use the roof as a green terrace, from which you could admire tree tops and a house that frames the greenery and the surroundings so that the dream images can be viewed from every perspective.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pictures around the house change in the rhythm of seasons, weather conditions, day and night cycles. Therefore the house interiors are flexibly exposed to the influence of the surrounding environment and adopt nature decorations through spacious windows and skylights.Images change cyclically giving the interiors unpredictable sets of colors and shades. Moving around the building you are welcome to admire different views and perspectives. Standing on the terrace one can observe the area as separate framed pictures - tops of the trees, open atrium of the house, garden part and architecture outlines.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in September 2021 in Sosnowiec and finished in March 2022 in Katowice. Planning permission received in January 2022. Site works started in May 2022. Building was built in November 2022. There are still works on site, in next several months we will start interior works and site works around building.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The additional idea of the project was to create still harsh unchangeable monolith, referring to rocks scattered in the region, which is constantly being complemented by the surrounding nature. We design green surfaces to create a network of eco-points of the building that provide a specific natural eco climate around the house. This is indeed our vision of a potential new order in architecture where the house becomes the centre of influencing the climate and Biodiversity change – building as a new biotope "asylum", a living library of animal plant genes and microorganisms. The building starts to be an ecosystem of the future. The best plants to fulfill the spaces are local, forest plants - they are well established and have all the conditions they need to grow and live. We use the thermoregulatory qualities of plants, their natural ability to benefit ionization, correction of air humidity and active reduction of impurities contained in it. Buildings integrated with such living facades and roofs absorb more CO2 than they emit it themselves. Buildings actively convert clean energy and stored rainwater into a positive climate change in their surroundings. Together with the photovoltaic installation and rainwater harvesting system and rainwater tank, we obtain a set of environmentally friendly solutions.
CHALLENGE: When designing a big challenge was the context of the place, the plot of large size but mostly forested, the investment fully had to be located on a small glade so as not to cut the trees of the local forest, which also belonged to the owners. Another important aspect was the combination of concrete technology with ecology. We decided to develop such a functional system that will give lightness to the shape of the building itself, dismembers the terraces and introduce elements of nature to the center of the house. Thus, we used the raw form and its strength under green terraces, both between the building, in its middle and on the roof. The building gained a new meaning in the ecosystem.Green living terraces became the leitmotif of the project. A big challenge during the implementation was to arrange formwork so as to get the planned saturation of the walls, mainly the front wall, which symbolizes large broken doors to the house. Minimalist facades, the cost-saving form was a big challenge in terms of detail. All installations had to be planned in advance and properly guided so that renewable energy sources can be used. Technology did not allow mistakes. We were guided by both - investors requirements and needs as well as by our internal belief that we are creating a house for years and we want it to fit even partially into the requirements of green order, which we consider to be an inevitable future.
