| DESIGN NAME: Rims and Spokes PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table INSPIRATION: The ideology of designing a coffee table from bicycle wheels is to make a creative design with focus on aesthetics, function and structure. The design is a classy coffee table with ample space to store things on it, easy to maintain and visually appealing. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The innovative idea of combining same kind of bicycle wheels helps to provide good strength and balance to the structure. The rims & spokes coffee table doesn’t attract rust due to the use of brass caps on each spoke of the wheel, which adds to the strength of the structure. The bicycle wheels are fixed as a singular structure with detachable glass provision making it easy to clean and maintain. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The most important aspect while designing the ‘rims & spokes coffee table’ is to make it user-friendly and maintenance-free. The coffee table with its ample space design can be accessed from any direction due to its circular pattern and helps to keep things comfortably spread across it. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2021 and was finished by January 2022 in Hyderabad, India. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Basic coffee tables, nowadays, are made with plywood, particle board and general fixtures used, are basic wooden joinery like box joint, basic butt joint and nuts & bolts. The rims & spokes coffee table is made using welding technique called ‘Arc welding’. The top two circular wheels are welded at the Centre and two half rims and two quarter rims are welded at two centers of the top wheels. For the stabilization and balancing of glass at the top is added “L” shaped steel pieces welded at 4 corners of each wheel with a hole on the top to attach Plastic Suction Cup to hold the glass on the top. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1340 mm x 700 mm x 460 mm TAGS: Coffee Table, Glass, Table, Table Design, Bicycle, Wheel, Design, Furniture, Furniture Design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: During November 2021, I started my research on materials for designing a piece of furniture that is sustainable. Through research different types of materials used in bicycle wheels was finalized. Then the steel wheels with brass caps on the spokes were chosen to help the structure from not rusting and also providing good strength to the structure. CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was the circular glass fixture on the top of the table. As the spokes of the wheels were not easy to balance the glass. It was then decided to use “L” shaped steel pieces which helped to elevate the glass at a level that balances it and gives stability being attached to the table.
