DESIGN NAME:
Ocean Vista Public Toilet Renovation
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Public Bathroom
INSPIRATION:
The exterior renovation is inspired by the rocks along the coastal trail. Due to salty sea breeze, layers of minerals adhered to the surface forming very special brown and reddish rocks in this region. The new functional elements adhere to the existing structure like minerals; its form and its color echo with the rock and with the natural surroundings. The rhythm of lines that shaped the add-on features filter sunlight forming a movement of light and shadows where human meets nature.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Ocean Vista is a public toilet renovation project located along the coastal trail at Coloane Macau on the hillside facing the ocean. By reorganizing the interior layout and introducing new functional elements on top, the new design not only optimizes the functions of a public bathroom, but also it brings human closer to nature. By providing a viewing platform to enjoy the ocean, a balcony seating to observe the stars at night and a long bench to chill - it is an authentic public space for all.

This project is located in Coloane Macau and is completed in May 2021 within 2 months of renovation period.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge is to reorganize the interior spatial layout and introduce new functional elements upon existing concrete structure in the same footprint. Our goal is to convert it beyond its simple function and to subvert the perception of a typical public bathroom in Macau, which is dark, dirty, messy, and smelly.

PROFILE:
the Volks Design, an inter-disciplinary design practice based in Macau lead by Harvard Graduated Architect Manuel Lam. Commissions ranged from urban design to architecture, from interior design to product design, from graphic design to branding design.
Manuel Lam, is the founder, the chief architect and creative director of the Volks Design. He holds a master degree from Harvard University with experiences among top leading architecture and design firms such as Foster & Partners in London and Sasaki in Boston. He also serves as a lecturer at the University of Saint Joseph Macau architecture department. He has been exhibition curator for Macau in the "16th Venice International Architecture Biennale". He has been awarded as M+ China Top 100 Luxury Interior Designer Award, 40 Over 40 Outstanding Design Elite Award Macau, and has been identified as Top 36 Chinese Design Stars.
