DESIGN NAME: Idyll of Saikung
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Visitor Centre
INSPIRATION: The motive of the design is to create a retreat for visitors in the countryside enabling their close contact with nature, which has become rare in the city of Hong Kong. Inspirations come from traditional villages with organic setting; and their houses with climatic responsive features including deep overhangs, sunscreens, veranda, as well as operable doors on facades, which are translated as glass walls and sliding doors in the multipurpose room enabling fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Situated in the beautiful countryside of Sai Kung, the project Hoi Ha Visitor Centre, is designed as a rural settlement with individual buildings organically related to the landscape. The architectural composition centres on the existing lawn, which forms a place of mediation between buildings and nature. The design creates a small-town like atmosphere with varieties of veranda and courtyards closely knitted together that reinterprets the idea of old traditional village in a new manner.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project serves to receive visitors before they proceed to the waterfront of the Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park via the trail on the north of the site. The central lawn is where gathering and activities for large group of visitors or students take place. The multi-purpose room and surrounding sheltered outdoor spaces are flexibly used for displays and small group learning. The lawns in the Centre with trees as natural shade also serve as ideal places for picnic and leisure at all times.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is situated near the Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, a scenic sea area with diverse marine lives in northeast Hong Kong. The site is located within beautiful woodland in Sai Kung West Country Park, and is connected to the waterfront by a country trail along the mangroves. Construction works commenced in 2018 and were completed in 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials and technologies were carefully chosen to correspond with the rural setting and reduce impact to nature. Sawn cut timber formwork was used for reinforced concrete walls, which saved further plastering and created natural timber texture. Sustainable measures including rainwater recycling and solar panels systems were adopted. Besides, as the site is not reached by city's sewer main, a bio-treatment system was provided to treat all waste water generated in a biological way.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Site area: 2920 sq.m.
Construction floor area: 385.15 sq.m.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Researches were conducted on nature-responsive design from the perspectives of traditional village and advanced building technologies. Insights were drawn from the organic disposition and passive climatic responsive features in rural settlement. Building technologies in sustainable building systems and prefabrication were also applied to reduce impact to nature during construction and operation of the project.
CHALLENGE: As the site is far from urban area, constructability was carefully considered during design. Some facilities, including caretaker offices and toilets, were designed as steel transportable-sized units; the structural frame and roof of the multi-purpose room were also made of steel. The steel elements were prefabricated in factories and transported to site for installation. This enabled complicated procedures to be conducted in factories where workmanship could be ensured.
