Interview with Yoshitaka Uchino at Tuesday 30th of August 2016 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? YU: The experiences of architectures such as Katsura Imprial VillaćLe Thoronet Abbey. Also the works by Tadao Ando like Church of light,Rokko-housings,Koshino Residence influence me. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? YU: I want to achieve public spaces the residents would enjoy while feeling the transition of light. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? YU: I develop the main concept of this works and design other houses,housings. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? YU: It took me about half a year. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? YU: I have been pursuited the concept of public spaces of plazas and streets while I was students. This concept have been with me since I set up my practice. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? YU: I want to produce works by myself. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? YU: Respect for nature,cultures of several countries,inspiring works by architects. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? YU: Works by Le Corbusier,Tadao Ando have big influeces on my attitude toward design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? YU: Individuals,companies,governments. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? YU: By employing simple forms or geometries,new forms of public spaces have come into being. I want to synthesize arhicectures and nature. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? YU: I imaged the voids with nature in the forest while I respect nature around the site. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? YU: Drawing pens. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? YU: I always design the interactions with nature in a simple way with geometry. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? YU: Toshi Kozo structural engineer Yukitoshi Ishikawa helped me to realize this design. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? YU: By using simple walls of reinforced concrete,the works has been realized. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? YU: I did a research on public spaces of museums,commercial buildings,public facilities when I was a student of graduate school.I employed the concept of designing of plazas and rojis to this work. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? YU: The strict regulation of the site concerning scenic zones have a really big impact on my design. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? YU: I think this new collective form with natural public spaces is a new architectural concept. Thus,I decided to submit my design to have it evaluated. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? YU: I sketched while reading books of works by Le Corbusier,Tadao Ando. There were several conflict of realization, by struggling them,for example,working on details,I came up with ideas to realize in the future. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? YU: Concerning lightness and transparency of my works,works and concepts by Renzo Piano,Byeler Foundation and Menil Collecion and so on,have also influence on me.
