Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow

The Faculty of Graphic Arts is one of the seven faculties at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Poland. The Faculty has strong tradition of graphic arts. Problems of graphic arts were undertaken as early as at the start of the Academy within Kraków University. In 1819 the first lithography studio was organized. In 1832 the programme of teaching engraving and lithography was introduced and conducted. During the reform of the Academy in 1859 a separate Studio of Graphic Arts was created. The Faculty of Graphic Arts traditionally combines graphic arts and graphic design in one curriculum, which is based on artistic conviction referring to the unity of art. The humanities-based artistic training has a new mission to accomplish, and should provide the basis for through artistic education regardless of the means and tools at the disposal of the artist - be it a designer or a graphic artist. The Faculty is widely known abroad, where its graduates are commonly recognized in many areas of graphic arts, e.g. Czeslaw Slania, Roman Cieslewicz, Jerzy Kucia. The teachers and students of the Faculty have developed a distinctive artistic environment in Krakow, since the early 1960s known as Krakow School of Graphic Arts. It has become the leading centre of graphic arts in Poland, and also widely recognised abroad. The graduates of the Faculty are frequently jurors in Polish and foreign festivals of graphic art, posters or animated films.
