Hopt Clean Soda

Hopt is a delicious clean soda fusing hop extracts with natural flavours and less than half the sugar of leading regular soft drinks. Through 'lean start-up' methodologies like rapid prototyping and extensive quantitative research, Hopt's multifaceted user-centred design unfolded. Over 15 features are built into each bottle, all offering specific benefits to the user considering their functional, social and emotional needs whilst socialising. Crafted by a team across Melbourne, Tokyo and Auckland, including agency partner Shine, Hopt was created in 2013.

Lion is a leading beverage and food company with around 7,500 people across Australia and New Zealand. The Lion portfolio includes many market-leading, household -name brands in beer, spirits, wine, milk, fresh dairy foods, juice, cheese and soy beverages. Within the Dairy and Drinks division, the Innovation team was tasked with exploring diversified growth options, which became the platform for creating Hopt. Taking inspiration from ‘lean start-up’ methodologies, an entrepreneurial approach was combined with user-centred design and the rigour of traditional quantitative research. The result was Hӧpt, a delicious clean soda presented with intriguing packaging and brand design.

Lion was formed in October 2009 under the name ‘Lion Nathan National Foods’, when Kirin Holdings Company Limited completed its purchase of Lion Nathan and merged the business with National Foods – which it has owned since 2007. In 2011, the company became known as Lion. Today, Lion employs close to 7,500 people across Australia and New Zealand with a portfolio of market-leading, household-name brands in beer, spirits, wine, milk, fresh dairy foods, juice, cheese and soy beverages. The Lion purpose centres on championing sociability and helping people to live well. It is within this context that the focus on creating a delicious clean soda appropriate for social occasions was established.
