Dvelas Upcycled sail cloth for contemporary furniture

DVELAS recovers used sails to transform them into contemporary designs, emerging as a creative reaction to harness the vast amount of material disposed from sailing ships, taking their aesthetics, materials, techniques and forms as a new way and inspiration for design. DVELAS produces in Limited and Unique Editions: These series originating from a specific sail, are identified with a tag with data about the source of the sail as the homeport, the sailboat, the type of sail and the original sailmaker.

DVELAS is an initiative involving the recovery of used sails for their transformation, applied to the design and production of contemporary furniture and projects. DVELAS is fuelled by a passion for the sea and navigation, and the designs are inspired by the rigging techniques of sailing boats. DVELAS design and produce furniture, re-using the sails and making them with the manufacturing techniques used by professional sail makers. The designs are based on the qualities of the sails and on their rigging techniques. They always have a conceptual component that evokes their origin, where tension, equilibrium, versatility or the work of the materials are important terms. DVELAS has two types of productions: Limited Editions: series originating from a specifi c sail, identifi ed with a tag with data about the source of the sail and the port of origin, the boat, the type of sail and the original manufacturer. Unique Editions: Exclusive pieces originating from a specifi c area of a sail with special plastic qualities due to their patina, marks or numbers. These pieces are also tagged with the data about the source of the sail. DVELAS is also works in the design and execution of projects, recovering sails to qualify spaces, creating shade, scenographies and ephemeral installations, etc. DVELAS has been created as a completely innovative initiative, with a conceptual, refl exive design that evokes the sea and sailing. An intrinsically ecological activity that recovers and re-uses sails to produce exclusive pieces of furniture.
