SUMMARY: Initiative to recover used sails and transform them, applied to design, textile architecture and contemporary furniture. All the designs are inspired by observing sailing techniques, nautical construction and the poetry of the sea itself. FURTHER DETAILS: With time and usage, the sails of a ship acquire deformations and damages that make them unusable for precise navigation. The material used in the manufacture of these, has excellent mechanical strength qualities and moisture behavior, attributes that are retained even when they are not longer suitable for navigation and other aesthetic attributes as a special patina acquired with the constant use in marine environments. DVELAS promotes the recovery of these used sails to transform them into contemporary designs, emerging as a creative reaction to harness the vast amount of material disposed from sailing ships, taking their aesthetics, materials, techniques and forms as a new way and inspiration for design. We are organized as a working group that investigates the fusion of two different activities, design and architecture, with the professional manufacture of sails. The idea is to use the material recovered, applying the techniques of rigging and sail-making and looking to decontextualize both, the material and technique, and apply them to design and architecture activities. Thus the way of working consists of making the sailmaker think as a designer and the designer as a sailmaker, making this empathy the key to creation towards a recycling of materials tasks and actitudes. DVELAS has two types of productions: Limited Editions: series originating from a specifi c sail, identified with a tag with data about the source of the sail and the port of origin, the boat, the type of sail and the original manufacturer. Unique Editions: Exclusive pieces originating from a specific area of a sail with special plastic qualities due to their patina, marks or numbers. These pieces are also tagged with the data about the source of the sail.
