Brought up in a revolutionary time for design, with eastern roots grown in western soil, Tiger is a culturally diverse designer with a passion for additive manufacturing, fine detail handcraft, and solving the world’s problems one design at a time. Educated at Victoria University of Wellington in state of the art design and research practices, and versed in cutting edge manufacturing techniques, Tiger now aims to bring the wonders of auxetic materials and voxel-based printing to the design industry of tomorrow.
I believe design is a medium which connects people to potential. Having been around since the dawn of civilization, design has often been perceived as a tacit and qualitative art, rather than the scientific and pragmatic procedure it embodies. When the first cave man chose to hone his flint into a biface, that was design, and it is no different today in the structural beams under your airplane seat, or the slightest chamfers on your smart phone.
We as a species are currently in a unique age of design. We’ve stumbled into a period where technology’s capability of spawning multitudes of possibilities has overtaken our capacity to comprehend them. We’re able to produce greater amounts of products, in larger scales, for grander enterprises than ever before. With the adoption of 4D printing and meta-materials, the whole notion of homogenous-material-based design has gone out the window. We’re at an age where we have far more toys than we could possibly play with, and I believe it is the responsibility of the designer to guide mankind towards utilizing these toys appropriately.
Through quality design, designers may be able to cure much of the world’s leading issues, provide equal opportunity to all, and innovate the world’s standard of living. Starting with something as simple as designing low-cost food production to integrating sustainable food systems, we can assist those less fortunate than us. Continuing with smart-interactions for people with disabilities, we can design support systems to give everyone equal opportunities in life. Finally, with the endless design opportunities presented to us with today’s technology, we can produce better, safer, and more comfortable living utensils and standards for all.
