| DESIGN NAME: Emperor PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table INSPIRATION: Emperor is born of the novel Neo-Sino design methodology, coined by the designer Tiger ChongSheng Guo. Neo-Sino aims to reintegrate true Chinese design influence into the societies of high design, whilst remaining respectful of contemporary design methodologies and values. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Emperor is the first of the Imperial Furniture Series, born of the novel Neo-Sino design methodology. Coined by the designer Tiger ChongSheng Guo, Neo-Sino combines traditional design principles from China’s rich 5,000 year history, with culturally unbiased contemporary design practices. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The object is used as a table. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2018 in Wellington and finished in December 2020 in Auckland, and was exhibited in RNDR 2020 in November 2020. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: CNC routed out of sustainable Jarah. CNC milled out of brass. Details were laser-etched. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 861mm x 994mm x 672mm TAGS: Emperor, table, luxury, chinese, neo-sino, dragon RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Neo-Sino believes that modern high design is derived almost exclusively from western design influences such as the neo-classism and Bauhaus movements. In addition to this, western influence has instigated much of the socioeconomic development of Asia in the last few centuries, resulting in many Asian designs falling short as poor western imitations. CHALLENGE: Attempt to combine traditional Chinese design methodologies with contemporary design practices.
