About Monica Maccaux : I am a graphic designer, type designer, and educator. I enjoy designing design pieces and typography for sport, as I am an athlete and am interested in how type and design impacts how you see an athlete and how athletes interact with their environment. I enjoy sharing my design and type knowledge with students, and to get them inspired to do great design and be a part of the future of graphic design, in all its applications. I hope to make the world a better place by creating clear, concise design and type that communicates clearly to everyone, with a fun, witty result.
STATEMENT OF ART:
Graphic Design is, and has always been, a major component of society and the business world. Starting with early advertisements of products, to the explosion of advertising platforms such as web, print, outdoor, tv, and radio, Graphic Designers are now more than ever important to the selling and placement of objects and ideas. With this important role comes great responsibility in that Graphic Designers are not only in charge of generating ideas for web banners or a logo, but are enablers of design in every aspect and application. Graphic Designers are not only print designers, they design spaces, movements, and ideas. Graphic Design is a canvas to explore many mediums and outlets, and by being fluent in technology, the possibilities are endless. The business world is reliant on graphic design, but often takes the back seat. By teaching our students (and our clients) the importance of Graphic Design, brand value increases, consumers are more engaged, and messaging is more clear.
My goal as a Graphic Designer is to create design which reflects the client brand values, while injecting my own design aesthetic into the piece. My hope is that my work elicits a reponse from the consumer: joy, a smile, action to do something. My recent work with type design reflects my desire to express my love of illustrating, designing what language looks like, and changing the end-user perspective of what a typeface should look like, and how it should function. As a teacher, my hope is to pass the tools of communication down to my students so that they understand how the design world works. If the students understands the value and impact of their design, they will be more engaged in the process from concept to completion and have better design because of this.
An interest of mine is how typography impacts the end user to react, purchase, or elicit certain emotional responses. By using a script typeface for a wine label, it immediately gives the item a high-end, expensive feel. Sharp edges on a typeface give the feeling of harshness, sour, and angry. Soft edges on a typeface denote friendly, smooth, and sweet. How do the characteristics of a typeface influence consumerism, advertising, and design? These are subjects I would like to investigate through my own work designing typefaces, as well as challenging my students to question type as a tool to express, sway, and direct consumers.
