Graham, MFA, is an award-winning visual communicator, artist, author, and a Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. She has exhibited her digital art prints in 120 regional, national, and international exhibitions including in Dallas, Honolulu, Savannah, Los Angeles; Tehran, Iran; Limassol, Cyprus; Cheonan, South Korea; and Tokyo, Japan. She has produced visual communication industry work for regional, national, and international clients. Her publications include the books Sustainability Research by Designers (2011), Basics of Design: Layout and Typography for Beginners 2e in English and Japanese (2005, 2008), Basics of Design: Layout and Typography for Beginners (2002), Principles of Interactive Design (1999), and numerous paper presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles on gestalt theory, experience design, environmental typography, design ethics, and sustainable design.
Design and Art are interchangeably part of my visual esthetic. In many of my compositions I explore repeating elements, juxtapositioning, random element placement, and size reduction/enlargement within a rigid—yet violated—grid structure. Voids and spaces are considered important to the work, and are strategically placed within the composition to provide both visual relief and a sense of the ‘missing’ or the ‘out-of-place.’ Rapid visualization and fluid use of the technical—Illustrator and Photoshop—greatly assist in the creation of multiple alternative layouts…all seeking the magic “ah-ha” moment of visual discovery. During the creative process serendipitous color compositions are actively sought and carefully recorded. Rotated, repeated, and altered shapes build a vibrant, discordant, near-musical sense of place in many of my pieces. This approach has been fruitful as it has yielded exhibitions at regional, national, and international venues.
