DESIGN NAME: Peace Not War Multifunction Graphic Art
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunction Graphic Art
INSPIRATION: Inspired by psychedelic rock and roll band posters, Polish poster design, and protest marches of the 1960s and 1970s, Ms. Graham incorporates elements of design from each interpreted with a forward-looking design esthetic.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This graphic art design Peace Not War is rendered in a visually striking format easily adaptable to a wide variety of limited edition apparel, notebooks, posters, and artwork. Strengths of this graphic art is a strong sense of movement and an almost musical interpretation of the topic through repeating geometric elements, lines, and emphasis on design principles such as repetition and flow. Ms. Graham extracts bright vibrant colors from nature and amplifies them through the creative process to emphasize youthful energy and almost a spiritual sense of reverence towards the topic of peace.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Designed to appeal to the young-at-heart, the shoes are meant to be worn with a glad heart and quick feet, the notebook to inspire energetic scribbling and obsessive note-taking, and posters and artwork provide fuel for deep thinking and pure enjoyment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The duration of this project is ongoing, with additional products to be available through online marketplaces in 2017. Shoes were available for purchase in 2016. Elements in this series have been shown in Korea, New York, and in Fort Worth, Texas. Total work time involved in this limited edition multifunction graphic art is approximately one month. Intrigued by the vibrant retro spirit of the design and the possibility of adapting it to a wide variety of multifunction design objects, Ms. Graham continues to seek exhibition and marketplace opportunities for this series, while developing the concept further.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Drawing upon the history of the classic peace symbol, Ms. Graham intuitively placed visual elements such as lines, circles, and repeating graphics of the peace symbol in Adobe Illustrator. The underlying design process relied on chance and play in the placement of visual elements in the digital environment. Ms. Graham challenged the creative process by imposing artificial time limits and a restricted color palette to achieve a playful, vibrant series of designs.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge lay in interpreting the classic peace symbol from 1960s and 1970s protest marches into a visually appealing series of designs with a modern design esthetic, while drawing upon the color and movement of Psychedelic rock and roll posters vintage to the time period.
