View Larger Image and Additional Photos of Martha Calderon STATEMENT OF ART:About Martha Calderon : Martha’s artwork embraced representational, abstract and non-representational forms singularly in images or in various forms throughout a composition. Most of her work has been inspired by her longing and nostalgia and memory of her homeland, Colombia. Her work therefore, is imbued with an emotional and visual power unique to her inner spirit and maturity and added greatly to the multi-multiculturalism and the university wide emphasis placed on “internationalism”. Martha’s studio practice has been diligent, productive and passionate; full of investigation and self-reflection along with experimentation. It was evident in her visual statements, how engaged she was with emblematic images that reflected in color, form, rhythm…and a play between field and ground that sought out the most interesting themes and variations reminiscent in her cultural heritage and her life in America.
Martha developed a studio practice which is mature in its approach and execution, and is pro-active in researching materials and processes, and she was inquisitive and curious about contemporary trends in the printmaking field; and developed a deeper willingness and execution of a unique and personalized idealization. always adapting new techniques to her work in new and surprising ways. The experience of being part of a new culture different than mine has influenced several aspects of my development as a person as well as a professional artist and designer. Being a Colombian living in an international soil has inspired me to embrace my culture more intentionally and passionately. My sense of agency through my work entails mainly in the desire to share the richness of my country and everything that it has to offer; to show a different and positive face of Colombia. The Printmaking and knitwear processes have given me the freedom to create and express my ideas differently than any other process. Printmaking allows me to print on any surface and incorporate any media such as ceramics, sculpture, textiles, painting, drawing, and photography. Creating garments and accessories as a Knitwear designer has been an exciting, and a breathtaking experience. And now that I have a better knowledge in textiles I can blend both Printmaking and Knitwear techniques to create new things in a more functional way. I’m very passionate about surfaces and textures, so I’m always looking for new processes and materials to work with. I want to see my work always evolving, while preserving my views, purpose and beliefs. I am inspired by the way garments can be seen as an art form which can reflect cultural enrichment, but even more when other designers can make from their designs an extension of their culture to the rest of the world, and a closer approach to their roots. I try to reflect all of these aspects through bright colors, a variety of textures, artisan work, and asymmetrical and organic Silhouettes. I value textile design because every piece has a unique value. The use of natural fibers, eco-friendly materials, artisanal, and millenary techniques guarantee an exclusive design, an unrepeatable, and sometimes unimaginable. During the creation process until the final touch, it obligates the creator to awake his/her more refine senses and be full of visual and tactile sensations ORGANIZATION: independent contractor NON-DESIGN OCCUPATION: Graphic designer Media, graphic, printing, culture, design EDUCATION: 2015, Advanced Fashion Design, A.A, FIDM, Los Angeles/USA. 2013, Fashion Knitwear Design, A.A, FIDM, Los Angeles/USA. 2010, Fine Art/Print-making, B.A, University of Florida, Florida/USA. 2007, Fine Arts, A.A, Broward Community College, Florida/USA.
