DESIGN NAME: Aluminium Plates
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sustainable Revolution
INSPIRATION: The product goes on the market to satisfy the need of disposable plates since the widespread traditional plastic plates (neither recyclable nor biodegradable-compostable) are going to be dismissed due to the EU Directive 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment. Being aluminium 100% recyclable, the product range can be one of the solutions for wholesalers and catering chains searching for a viable eco-friendly product.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Aluminium plates are an eco-friendly alternative to non-recyclable disposable plates, conceived for catering industry, Mass Market Retailers and consumers. They come in different sizes and shapes and they can contain all kind of foods, including acid and salty ones. A peculiar feature is that they allow heating in both traditional and microwave ovens, freezing and deep freezing, serving and consuming food. Plates can be lacquered in any colour (even different in the internal and external sides).
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Aluminium plates can be used in ovens even with temperature over 200°C.
After use they can be thrown on the recycling bin (according to the national regulations), to be fully recycled.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in January 2019, and the product has been officially launched at Fiera Marca in Bologna, 15-16 January 2020.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product is patented by Contital Srl through a cold-moulding process. The alloy is made with 100% of recycled aluminium.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Plates are made of an aluminium alloy of class 8000, with a thickness between 60 and 90 microns. Dimensions vary depending on the specific plate, but they are in line with similar products (made of different materials) already on the market.

CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project has been to develop a product with specific technical characteristics to ensure strength despite the low thickness and to withstand the stress of transportation, sealing and storage.
