| DESIGN NAME: House for Parents PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence INSPIRATION: As a traditional daily custom in this island, people gather and stay under the shadow of large trees. We aimed to create architecture that celebrate the culture of the region and lead to re-emerge the spirit of the traditional life in the island. The space under the large roof which is supported by thin steel columns provide shady and cool comfortable interior that suite sever climate in the southern island. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This house for parents located on Amami Island where is severe subtropical climate and often hit by typhoon. To tackle this climate, we install a large roof supported by 4 meter-span steel framework structure for a cool and shady environment as if it is a space under trees. Concrete walls are designed to stand independently to achieve a plan that is free from structure for the roof. The common areas are made to expend outwards with the projecting concrete walls as if it continues boundlessly. NAME: MATSUYAMA ARCHITECT AND ASSOCIATES PROFILE: Matsuyama Architect and Associates is the design-led award winning architectural practice based in Fukuoka, Kyusyu, Japan. In more than 20 years of practice history, series of finely crafted architecture has been produced that praise profound tradition of Japanese culture and harmonise with contemporary society in the globe. Masakatsu Matsuyama, principal of the practice, and his architectural philosophy were formed under significant influence from his birthplace, Amami Oshima which is one of southern islands in Kyushu-region. Its bilateral environment which are warm and gentle climate with intimate community and hence, typhoon-hit sever climate affect his architectural principle. Among a wide range of projects in scale, from 11,000 m2 hospital to a suburban wooden shed, luxury resort-like healthcare design based on thorough understanding of functionalities create distinctive character of the practice. At the same time residential building based on careful observation of human activities generate simple but accomplished prototype of contemporary residential buildings. |
