| DESIGN NAME: Naked Castle PRIMARY FUNCTION: Visual Signage System INSPIRATION: The design of the signage system gets inspiration from Art Deco style of European style castle that gives consideration to both raw and elegant architectural styles. British style elements like hoof, shield, and streamer are well merged in the coat of arms. The icons of king and queen wearing crowns are applied to the signage as well. Each letter and number on the signage adopts double lines as part of the decoration. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The coat of arms and the Art Deco style signage system emphasize the match of geometric figures and lines. All the lines are close to the golden ratio according to precise calculation. The signages combine the experience of the naked founder and the scenery of Moganshan, which shows the lifestyle of immersing in nature and the pure pleasure of life instead of being just signage. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The signage system is integrated into the style of the naked Castle. From the conflict and fusion of different styles, cultures and ages, one can find the castle gives consideration to both raw and elegant architectural styles. As a convergence of spirits and memories, the coat of arms shows the tourists the stories behind over a hundred years history of the naked Castle and the changes of Moganshan. The stone castle with a sleek design is like an introverted beauty standing on the top of Moganshan. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016 and was completed in June 2017, including a 6-month on-site investigation which gives inspiration to the design team. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The coat of arms took shape in the manuscript. We then poured low melting point metal into an equal ratio bed die made of hand-carved wood in mold casting. At last, it was hand polished and colored according to the color and history of the castle. The signage in the castle adopt forged iron and local wood as the material, which makes them durable in outdoor environments. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The coat of arms:1165(w)*1640(h) TAGS: Signage,Way finding,VI，Hotel Logo，graphics RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The naked Castle once had two legendary owners, whose stories were merged in the design of the coat of arms. In 1910, Dr Duncan Main built a European style castle villa (the predecessor to the Castle at naked Castle), which was later brought by patriot Zhang Jingjiang in 1932. The colour of the signages gets the inspiration from the natural scenery of Moganshan. Due to the climate on the mountaintop, stones, cast irons, and anticorrosive wood are taken as the main materials of the signs to adopt to the local environment. CHALLENGE: 1.On-site investigation and location of signages The castle is built on the mountain with a steep slope, which is a demanding work environment for designers as they have to walk back and forth to choose the best location of the signages. 2.Signage fabrication and material handling As the castle is located on the mountaintop, we use local Wukang stone in signage fabrication. The wood and iron used are also bought and processed in the local area, adding elements with local characteristics to the castle while saving the cost on material handling.
