DESIGN NAME: Domik Ptashki
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Birdhouse
INSPIRATION: Why birds? Birds protect the environment from insect pests; their singing gives a person pleasure, peace and beneficial effects on his mental health. By interacting with birds, human can feel the unity with Nature.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is an opportunity to take care of birds and their habitats. Domik Ptashki is close to a natural hollow, and its round shape reduces the impact of rain, snow and wind. The low center of gravity allows place the birdhouse on the tree without additional fastening equipment. The inlet hole was reinforced to protect birds from predators.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Due to the low center of gravity, the birdhouse can be securely fastened between branches without damaging the tree. If a tree of suitable height and thickness cannot be found, then a long pole can be installed to fix the birdhouse using a wicker basket or a metal grip on top. Domik Ptashki is collapsible; it is better to remove and clean it at the end of the season, so next year the bird settles there again.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2019 in Tolyatti and ended in December 2019 in Tolyatti.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In order to select appropriate types of wood and natural protective coatings, several prototypes were built for outdoor testing. Due to this, the design and production technology were significantly improved. The design of the birdhouse was built in the form of an octagonal prism to increase strength and ease of manufacture; the body and mechanisms was made of wood and coated with eco-friendly protective layers for their durability.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height 290 mm.
Width 220 mm.
Depth 220mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Using the principles of design thinking, the project team moved away from designing a traditional birdhouse. It was studied the ideal nesting places for birds in nature; searched for successful examples of artificial birdhouses; interviewed the ornithologist, PhD, Galina Lebedeva. As a result, a project concept was created and steps for its implementation were developed.
CHALLENGE: The main difficulty was to find a balance in the project. On the one hand, the birdhouse should be as close as possible to natural habitats of birds, it should be safe for the environment, do not have bright colors and smells. On the other hand, it must have a stable structure to withstand climatic changes and extreme temperatures from minus 25 to plus 30 C. Moreover, the house should be attractive and easy to maintain for people.
