Cultural Mixed use Social Housing

INSPIRATION:
Rice culture is the most essential part in Taiwan’s agriculture industry. The disposed rice straw is widely applied on the architecture as well as interior design. It is used for making furniture、partition walls、decorations and so on. In order to make visitors experience the real terrain and rice paddy before, the complex surface structure is designed as a rooftop rice paddy. Through combining diverse usage of rice to provide visitors a different experience as well as increase the opportunity of

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This social housing design aims to reproduce the local rice culture and history. The sharing lifestyle an sharing entertainment are expected to be created between the new residence and local residence. Furthermore, to attract tourists to participate with these new lifestyles is important too. The terrain in Qingpu district and local agriculture traditions are the main concept of this project.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Thousands of ponds and hills in Taoyuan is the main feature of Nature, and this unusual landscape is used as the principal axis of this social housing design. Through the combination of organic form (public area) and module form (living area) to achieve the flexible utilization of space. Moreover, the view of Laojie river and the grass field are emphasized to ascend the relationship between nature and architecture.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in November 2018 in Taoyuan and finished in January 2019 in Taipe, and was exhibited in Taiwan Tech as the final design project for the design studio course of junior architecture school students.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The location of this project was a huge rice paddy. After the main curvy structure is accomplished, most of the partition walls are made of straw bricks as well as the furniture to let visitors experience the straw arts and atmosphere right away.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The commercial area is at first floor to the third floor, providing those artists who live in the upper floor to teach others how does the artworks be made. The space provide machines and tables, at the other side, the library provides quiet place for residence and others reading. The lower part of this architecture adapt concrete shell structure to create curvy terrain-profile columns and ceiling to reflect the special geography of Taoyuan. The upper structure for residence is the normal concrete structure to optimize the utilization of space and reduce the budget.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This social housing design aims to reproduce the local rice culture and history. The sharing lifestyle and sharing entertainment are expected to be created between the new residence and local residence. As the result, we create the combination of organic form and module form to achieve the flexible utilization of space.

CHALLENGE:
Plethora ponds, hills, mound, grass field, and the view of Laojie river in our site Taoyuan Qingpu are the main features of Nature, and these unusual landscape environment are used as the dominant concept of this social housing design. Through combining diverse usage of rice to provide visitors a different experience as well as increase the opportunity of interaction between tourists and residence.
