DESIGN NAME: WeWork 1 Belvedere Dr.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Co-Working Space
INSPIRATION: The focus was to design a space that feels at home and unique to Mill Valley. We wanted to take advantage of the surrounding nature and lush landscapes as the backdrop to an elevated WeWork space. Inspired by Northern California, we referenced the warmth in John Lautner and Sea Ranch homes. Utilizing local woods to build all the custom millwork in the space was very important to the overall aesthetic. By keeping the space simple, we are pulling the eyes to the surrounding nature.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: WeWork 1 Belvedere Drive is a part of The We Company’s foray into building spaces beyond the urban environment. The space utilizes a Northern California aesthetic with localized design elements that engage its surroundings with a complex collection of materials and artworks. White oak, a tree native and prosperous to the region, is used throughout and can be seen in the pantry, bookshelves, coffee tables, desks, and shelving.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The challenge was to design an open flexible space to allow for large events. With that in mind, we designed each area and component of the lounge to have multi-functions. The community bar serves as a reception area and working zone for the community team during the day. The same bar can be configured to be a DJ booth with a serving area during events. The main conference room facing the lounge is fully soundproofed so it can transform into a stage for open mic or comedy night. The same thought was put into the pantry island. We are able to have large gatherings around the island by keeping it singular.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed and open for member use on March 1, 2019 in Mill Valley, California.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to find a concept that embodies the WeWork brand that also aligns with the unique vibe of Mill Valley.
We also needed to look into the demographics of Mill Valley as this changes how we see our members. We expected mature brands requiring an elevated space that aligns with their needs.
We needed to design a comfortable home that functions both as an office and an event space.
