| DESIGN NAME: Stark House PRIMARY FUNCTION: House INSPIRATION: The thinking behind the architecture of Stark House show that there is little need for architecture to blend in with its surroundings or ‘neighbourhood character’. These only produce a sense of exclusivity and same-ness that we do not need in our increasingly divisive society. Instead, a critical response to context can often result in an architecture that is refreshing and welcoming to the place in which it exists. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In our understanding of context, we think the architect has a role in making a critical response to context - an honest response, rather than one that fits in with the status-quo. Our clients' request reflected the very human desire to be different as a unique individual. In keeping with maximising porosity through the site to showcase the green, the structural elements of the house is deliberate and exposed so as to eliminate architectural elements of distraction, STRUCTURE AS ARCHITECTURE. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The site topography was taken advantage of to create a basement nook that opens out to the green. Combined with the outdoor swimming pool, the basement nook - hardly perceived as a basement, becomes the focal point of family activities and outdoor entertainment. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Off-form Concrete Custom Micro-cement Clear Sealant Cement Plaster SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Site Area: 900 sqm Built Area: 600 sqm TAGS: Concrete, Off-form, Stark RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The planning of the house was conceived utilising the site's natural topography and mature trees at the rear of the site. Upon arrival to Stark House, it is apparent that the habitable spaces within turn away from the front where it faces neighbouring houses. Instead, Stark House faces the rear where the greenery provides a private, green sanctuary. As such, we find ourselves in very personal relationships with our clients, builders, and projects, ensuring absolute care and thought into every line that we put onto paper and its translation into built form. At the end of each project that undergoes such scrutiny is a sense of reward and satisfaction that is unparalleled, filtering through all that were involved. |
