DESIGN NAME: Press
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art Book
INSPIRATION: This art book was designed to feature the view of a jewelry artist who was confronted with a question that our mental association process is now more dependent on online searching rather than our personal experiences or sensibilities. She uploaded images of her own collage onto an image search engine to create a list of keywords through an algorithm. Will we blindly trust the search results? Or can we accept the differences, and find clues to develop a new way of seeing?
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This art book features 8 collages and the keywords derived from the algorithm. The keywords are each printed separately on tracing paper so that the viewer can see either just the collage, or the combination of it with its keywords. Square paper allows the viewer to see the collage and words equally from 8 different angles. As typography, the title PRESS is creatively arranged in the seams, etc. to conjure the image of the roller printing machine that was used for making the collage.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This art book is already available online.
Just after its publication, we joined the Tokyo Art Book Fair 2019 in July. More exhibitions are coming soon.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2019 in Tokyo. As a deliverable, this art book was published on June 27, 2019.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Stretchy paper and acrylic paints were used in making collages with an aim to minimize personal taste or intention of the jewelry artist as much as possible. Also, keywords linked to each collage were obtained using the Google image search algorithm.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 210mm x Height 210mm x Depth 10mm 40pages 100g
In this book, plain papers and tracing papers are alternately used.
TAGS: art book, jewelry art, PRESS, artificial intelligence, book design, graphic design
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To explore a question that our mental association process is now more dependent on online searching rather than our personal experiences or sensibilities.
This art book presents the viewer an opportunity to see both abstract collages and the keywords derived from the algorithm, which makes them realize their act of seeing and associating is changing due to the rise of artificial intelligence.
CHALLENGE: We printed the keywords derived from the algorithm separately on tracing paper so that the viewer can see either just the collage, or the combination of it with its keywords.
We used square paper as it allows the viewer to see the collage and words equally from 8 different angles.
Out of 40 collages, we carefully selected 8 collages in terms of its wide range of keywords and uniqueness in shape.

This work is truly inspiring! I am in awe of the creativity and innovation behind it - the combination of abstract collages and keywords derived from the algorithm is truly unique. The art book cleverly uses the square paper to create an equal viewing experience for both the collage and the words. The typography of the title PRESS is exceptionally creative, and the idea of using the roller printing machine to make the collage adds a special touch. This work is definitely a great example of good design and is worthy of its award.

This award-winning work is a remarkable combination of art and technology, as it allows viewers to explore the intersection between abstract collages and keywords derived from an algorithm. The use of stretchy paper and acrylic paints to create the collages is particularly intriguing, as it minimizes the personal taste or intention of the artist while still creating beautiful and unique works of art. The creative use of typography to evoke the image of a roller printing machine further emphasizes the creativity behind this piece. It is truly a remarkable work of art.
