DESIGN NAME: Olwen House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Low Rise Residential
INSPIRATION: Inspired of traditional house in countryside of central Vietnam and typical shop-house in Hoi An, we propose a dwelling filled with good old values in a new appearance. Those types of dwelling store many cultural and spiritual values about lifestyle of Vietnamese ancient customs and it has been proven to be eco friendly by using natural energy such as wind and natural light.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Functional spaces of Olwen House are receded into the back of the dwelling for housing a garden at the front door. The garden works as a buffer space which can cool down the interior space and prevent rain from entering the house. Olwen House is designed to open up to the alley so that owners can observe what happening outside of their house and vice versa. As a result, it creates welcoming atmosphere and interaction between the dwelling and the site.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In order to provide privacy and tranquility for owners to rest after a long working day, private spaces are placed on the third floor whilst the first and the second floor house working spaces. Those two areas are connected by a feature, which is red staircase, placed on the terrace. Instead of rigid walls, glass partition walls are used to divide interior spaces functionally but they still offer visual interaction between those spaces. On the attic floor, a playground is placed and decorated with vernacular patterns to recall childhood memories of owners.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: Due to the population growth, the city has to face many issues from rapid urbanization and a lack of trees and greenery such as air and noise pollution. As a result, local residents demand dwelling with closed facade to prevent noise and dust from entering their house. Incidentally, it gives residential areas a cramped feeling. In addition, harsh tropical climate is one of the challenge that we need to consider as it usually results in heating up the interior space.
