DESIGN NAME: STACHA
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stuttering Experience Device
INSPIRATION: When I was nine, I started stuttering, and I grew into a 24-year-old woman without ever being cured. Even now, I still battle with this issue, because I talk with people every day. At those times, this stuttering symptom is a prominent concern, and so I feel it has great influence on my life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Stacha permits wearers to experience a stuttering-like sensation by sending a faint – and thankfully painless – current of electricity through the larynx, which then constricts the muscles in the throat, making it difficult to properly pronounce words.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The STACHA is a device which enables wearers to experience the symptoms of stuttering. When a person with this disorder stutters, a distinguishing feature is an overactive usage of the muscles in the throat. This collar-like device has been developed to enable wearers to experience a realistic sensation of stuttering, by sending a faint current of electricity into the throat area, which constricts the muscles and re-creates a stuttering condition, making it difficult to properly pronounce.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Over several months I developed the idea for a simulation device with the assistance of self-help group Tokyo Genyukai, people from stuttering circles in the University of Tokyo. And medical researchers until eventually the device was showcased at SXSW in 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Conducted interviews with stutterers. Then we have established two issues which this device will solve. Firstly, by experiencing the symptoms of stuttering, we can spread awareness of this issue, thereby reducing instances of childhood bullying which will lead to reduced insecurity and inferiority complexes, and prevent such conditions from taking hold into adult stuttering. Secondly, that by having family members and people in the workplace gain a greater understanding of stuttering.
CHALLENGE: Stuttering is a disorder defined by a broken pattern of speech, either by the repetition of syllables, prolongation of words, or extended pauses. Sometimes facial and body movements can accompany efforts to speak. Figures from the British Stammering Association suggest that 5% or more of children under the age of five go through a stammering phase at some point in their speech and language development and without therapy a quarter of these children will go on to develop a persistent stammer.
