| DESIGN NAME: M50 Art Hotel PRIMARY FUNCTION: Art Hotel INSPIRATION: M50 Art Hotel is located in Pingle, Sichuan. Related to the local culture, Pingle is planned to be a music theme town. Therefore, the starting point of this project is around music. Further exploring the local genes, we learnt that one of a well-circulated love stories happened here, and Guqin “Lv Yi” was the love token. So we abstract the action of playing the guqin into architectural form. When the strings solidify at the climax of the movement, the final form of the building is obtained. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In this design, MUDA-Architects strives to explore and activate local cultural genes, and to create a landmark building that inherits the historical context and is forward-looking. The building generates the entire volume through several rhythmic curves, and the flowing surface reflects the rhythm of music. The external curtain wall adopts the horizontally subdivided aluminum plate, which looks like bamboo texture, giving a positive response to the characteristics of Sichuan bamboo culture. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The main entrance of the building is located below the most fluctuating part of the form, which means the crescendo of music. The two secondary entrances are located on the short sides of the building. After entering, it is a shared space with a height of 16 meters. The first floor includes a variety of composite functions such as reception, lobby bar, leisure space, and exhibition area. The internal body has 4 floors, and the public corridor of each floor continues the rhythmic curve elements, thus forming a well-proportioned flowing space. At the same time, the spiral staircase is used to organize the vertical traffic in the shared space, making it the focus of streamline organization and visual appreciation in this space. The first floor is a public space, including the reception, lobby bar, coffee, tea house, hot spring pool and other functional area. The 2-4 floors are mainly guest rooms. The sky garden on the roof of the building includes bar and landscape pool, etc, providing people with quality leisure experience. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project site is in Pingle Town, Qionglai City, China. Now the design is completed and expected to begin construction in October 2019. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The external curtain wall design adopts the horizontally subdivided aluminum plate, and the change of curvature caused by the surface shape is eliminated by the gap between the each unit, ensuring the precise control of the curtain wall. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The building has a total length of 80 meters, an average width of 20 meters and the highest point of 18 meters.
