| DESIGN NAME: Ri Shan Shui PRIMARY FUNCTION: Set of Calligraphy Paperweights INSPIRATION: The Chinese character is the symbol of our ancestors’ wisdom and represents the beauty and essence of Chinese culture. However, nowadays, people often consider it to be only a tool for communication. Thus, we designed the set of paperweights, symbolizing three pictographic Chinese characters, sun, mountain, and water, in the hope of inviting people to appreciate the beauty of Chinese characters. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This series is consisted of Ri / Shan / Shui. Ri/The Chinese character日, meaning the sun, is completed when a writing brush is set on the paperweight. It is made of Walnut and brass to express the warmth of and handwriting. Shan/The shape of this paper town reflects the Chinese character 山. In Chinese poetry, the mountain is a conceptual metaphor of a scholar’s integrity. Shui/The transparent of glass represents water flow, reminding people that words can be as soft as water, yet powerful. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: They can be used as pen holders or to suppress items and decorate the table. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2017 in Taipei and finished in April 2017 in Taipei. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Ri / We applied wood lathe to shape walnut and employed CNC to cut brass. Shan / We shaped ceramics into the appearance of mountain and spray-painted the embellishment snow on the top of mountain. Shui / We injected a small amount of water into the hollow glass and then shaped it into the form of water flow. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Ri / 95 mm × 95 mm × 32 mm Shan / 45 mm × 40 mm × 20 mm , 40 mm × 40 mm × 80 mm , 90 mm × 45 mm × 50 mm Shui / 130 mm × 45 mm × 20 mm , 150 mm × 45 mm × 25 mm , 180 mm × 45 mm × 30 mm TAGS: Product, product design, industrial design, stationary, calligraphy, Chinese culture, paper town, decorative items RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The forming of Chinese characters can be classified into six categories. Pictogram, one of the categories, conveys its meaning through transforming the image of a physical object into a character. We picked three pictographic Chinese characters and made use of the materials that can express their meanings. We integrated pictogram into our product, in the hope of inviting people to appreciate the beauty of Chines characters. CHALLENGE: It is challenging to find a technician to cut metal sheets with CNC because in Taiwan few technicians are willing to take such small orders.
