DESIGN NAME: Wonder
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Application
INSPIRATION: Finding the right travel companion is difficult. The inspiration came from a solo trip to Mexico City. While I really enjoyed solo traveling, I wonder why it was so hard to find travel companions who shared the same interests with me. I used some travel apps at the time and most of them were either too dating focused or did not have enough users. Therefore, I wanted to create an app that helps people match with others based on interests and availabilities.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: While several apps exist for matching travelers around the world, there are still unmet needs for those who wish to find travel companions when they travel. It is simply hard to find good travel companions who not only have the same vacation schedules but also similar interests. Wonder helps travelers find one another quickly and safely through real time location, secure verification process, and other unique features.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When users open Wonder, they can sign in or sign up to get started. First time users are required to go through verification process. After that, users can edit their profile, which include their interests, hometown, and preferred languages, etc. The main functions of this app are: 1) my trips- allow users to add trips and the duration 2) profile and search around- create an amazing profile and search for the best travel companions 3) chatroom- talk to people who you have talked to.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: August 2018-December 2018, Seattle.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I first interviewed people who have traveled solo in the past and learned about their frustrations and expectations. The main takeaways are: 1) friends can be the worst travel companions 2) travelers enjoy meeting others at places like hostels or coffee shops 3) interest driven trips are appealing to travelers. I then created personas and problem statement: finding a good travel companion is difficult. From there, I used feature prioritization method and created competitor analysis, site map, user flow, wireframes, and usability studies.
CHALLENGE: During the research phase, the main challenge was to find people who have traveled solo before and learn about their frustrations. Then, the main challenge was to create user friendly experiences and features.
