| DESIGN NAME: Near Light PRIMARY FUNCTION: Video Animation and Dance INSPIRATION: The inspiration of the project came from experiencing the transformation of Macao from a peaceful peninsula to a metropolitan city. As Reinsley Husson wrote in a review of Near Light: "Every life is heading towards an unknown destination - a journey of tragedies and triumphs that ultimately allows us to discover the world, and more importantly, ourselves." UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Through capturing imagery of floating lights on streets after midnight when the busy city was calming down, this video animation aspires to evoke a nostalgic sensibility for Macao, a tranquil peninsula in southern China near Hong Kong. As a reflection and questioning to the prosperous economic development in a city well-known for gambling industry, this work provokes the audiences into the search of the meaning of life. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Video footages filmed with a Canon 5DSR and edited in Adobe Premiere for the animation. This work could also include dancers in a multimedia performance. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This work could be a video for a show/screening only or could include dance in a multimedia performance with LED panel on stage or within a museum/gallery installation. TAGS: art video, music video, video animation, multimedia show, synthesis of video animation and dance RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This work is a multimedia video animation for screening and show, but it could also be part of a multimedia dance performance with a large LED panel on stage or within a gallery/museum installation. Through manipulation of the manual focus function during filming, a dreamy effect is captured to reveal a nostalgic sensation. The video footages will then be edited to match the musical texture. In the performance, dancers added another layer of meaning to the video animation and together created a touching performance on stage. CHALLENGE: Capturing the floating lights on street and matching images/animation with music to creative the desired mood. The incorporation of dancers in the production is also a big challenge.
