PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Toilet Paper

INSPIRATION:
We started to brainstorm on the product range of our client, how it can be refreshed and put extra value in it by keeping the feeling of buying something clean, soft and the same product inside. We came across with the toilet paper. The packaging, the interaction, the look of the paper is just like at the beginnings, 130 years ago. Living spaces are getting smaller, therefore, we love compact solutions. Purchasing habits have changed, urban lifestyle is getting smarter. As a solution faster and cleverer purchasing systems are developed.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A groundbreaking compact design is created which facilitates consumers shopping processes, aids product usage and storage. Not to mention the savings in production and material utilization. We designed the smallest toilet paper package with the most paper inside. Research resulted in the following: the need of a smaller package, change in shape, have a stronger grip, be multifunctional and eco-friendly.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The product is sustainable and provides multifunctional usage. Its home application is easier and supports toilet paper handling. It is not only compact and easy to carry home, but you can even use it for other purposes: toilet paper feed, garbage can. The good quality of tape helps to carry the product safe and easy to handle. Through the perforations on the top you can open the product easily. Optional sizes are available at the perforated surface which give you the opportunity to decide how you would like to pull the paper and enables further usage of the package. If the paper runs out, you can use the empty shell as a dustbin.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2018 and the finalized product got announced in December 2018. The project took place in Budapest, Hungary. The development phases necessitated 2 different spots; an office environment and a well-equipped place to build the prototypes.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We minimized the package size in order to meet the consumer needs. Without changing the production method, our product is tubeless and contains 9 rolls which equals to the normal packages 8 rolled two-third. We rolled the paper more tightly than on the regular rolls, so we got the same amount of paper with 3 rolls instead of 9 ordinary rolls. Our new generation toilet paper is center feed, meaning, you can pull the paper out of the center. We took out the tubes and used them to wrap the product. 9 inner rolls left out provide enough material for packaging.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions of the toilet paper are: 300 mm height and 170 mm diameter The PP tape is plastic but removable and still recyclable. No surplus in material usage; it is based on pure reduction. Thanks to the new shape, our design needs 30% less material for packaging. The development is pointing towards the future. No surplus in material usage, it is based on pure reduction. We do not need any special machine or technology to produce this new form of toilet paper and its packaging; you use less material to get more done.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
First, we made a research on the hygiene paper market, to see the recent product facilities, and potential developmental opportunities. We made up an online questionnaire to ask peoples opinion on toilet paper usage and packaging. Moreover, we prepared a visual case study based on shopping patterns from the very first step of the purchasing till at home. The research showed real interaction with the product right till the end where users show how they keep it and store the rest.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to create a compact form that contains the amount of paper which gives out the average quantity carried home at one time by the consumers. We would like to give you the feeling of infinite toilet paper which is sustainable and eco-friendly. However the most challenging part was to think out of the box, release visually the average shape of toilet paper, get rid of the plastic bag and assign a new shape and material to the package which we are used to.

PROFILE:
Our client named Vajda-Papír Ltd is a household hygiene paper producer company, who are based in Hungary and 100% owned by a Hungarian entrepreneur family. They created several brands since establishment 20 years ago, but we as advertising agency work with their brand, Ooops!. We are on track to transform the brand into a love brand in Hungary.
