| DESIGN NAME: Elan PRIMARY FUNCTION: Children's Mouth Exam Product INSPIRATION: Elan took inspiration from the natural suppression of the tongue while children eat lollipops. By utilizing an object of children's enjoyment, that naturally produces tongue suppression, pediatricians and parents could utilize this tongue depressor to exam the child's throat and palate easier. Another inspiration was from smartphone users taking picture for before and after in order to investigate the difference. Therefore, camera modules is able to take pictures in order to visually identify the progress quickly. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design enables to take pictures of patients’ throat as well as measure temperature. Current practice in pediatrics is to perform separately for taking pictures and measuring temperature, which would give not only the patient discomfort, also anxiety. The strength of this design is that young patients like children would not get scared because the design is shape of lollipop. When a young patient places Elan the way he or she would eat lollipop, it will automatically suppress patient’s tongue, which enables to take a clear picture of patient’s throat to correctly diagnose what went wrong. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By having the child position this product in their mouth like a lollipop, Elan allows the child's tongue to easily be depressed for easy viewing and easy picture taking of the child's palate and throat. The parent or doctor could easily compare the photo with past photos in order to monitor progress. After utilizing Elan, it is slid into the back of the screen, allowing for charging and uv light sterilization. For ease of use, when charging and being sterilized, Elan's inset led at the bottom of the handheld device shines red. In one year, the University of Chicago Pediatric Center receives 37,000 general pediatric visits per year. According to Dr. Hegde, Director at the Pediatric Center, 80 percents of all pediatric visits include tongue depressors, equalling 29,600 depressors per year. According to Dr. Powell, ER pediatrician, 75 percents patients she sees without a depressor because of fear though tongue depressors allow her to get the most informative information. CHALLENGE: There were several challenges to overcome.Although there were many technologies available, it is important for designers to identify a technology that is reliable and could be adapted in the most place. Therefore, we decide to use Wi-Fi module as the network connection. Elan has a built-in uv light to sterilize the medical equipment in order to solve a hygiene issue for camera module. The camera module has a lollipop shape, which would lead to natural tongue depression.
