INSPIRATION:
Mexico is a country that inspires, it's like an open book to the world full of culture, art, and history. Mexico is where Melissa Han found the inspiration for the project. Skall, the name of the brand, comes from the combination between the words Mezcal and Skull. The idea was to create an original name. Why skull? Death is also a very important symbol in Mexico, It has a strong connection with the old Aztecs since the mezcal was considered a sacred drink that only the Gods could drink from it.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
What makes Skall more special than the others is that offers a complete collection that goes from a shot of Mezcal to even sweet Mezcal cocktails. The packaging consists of two bottles joined by a leather belt that makes it look like it's a single bottle, this is with the intention of carrying two different products, but of the same origin. The goal is to change and enlarge the perspective of the traditional Mezcal and make known the beautiful Aztec civilization by illustrations.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Skall consists of two bottles joined by a leather belt that makes it look like it's a single bottle, this is with the intention of carrying two different products, but of the same origin: The Mezcal as the main drink, and the Maguey's syrup as a cocktail ingredient. The leather belt was designed to join the two bottles in a more elegant and handcrafted way, which also guarantees the safety of the bottles as it protects the base of the bottle.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project began in mid-December of 2016 as a proposal for the thesis of Melissa's degree in Visual Communication Design. She had a strict schedule for the investigation and the manufacture of each piece of Skall, including the shipments from Mexico to China and the search of materials. Both the graduation and design exhibition were held in May 2017 at the Art and Design Academy of Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Skall was later exhibited in other parts of China throughout the year of 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
All the bottles of Skall were made in a mold and blown, in Xaquixe, an artist studio in Mexico. Approximately 20 bottles were produced for the Exhibition in Beijing. All the caps and wooden boxes were carved with small machinery and by hand in China. The leather belts were made by the designer since some time ago she took craft courses on how to handle leather. Ultimately for the printing of the labels, Melissa Han made several experiments with foil paper and wax powder to create effects on the label's illustration.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Each bottle of Skall has divided into two parts: The large bottle has: 21cm height, 9.5cm diameter for 650ml approximately; The small bottle has: 6cm height, 9.5cm diameter for 100ml approximately. The bottles together make a total of 27cm height. The two large wooden boxes white and red have measurements of 25cm height, 34cm width and 17cm thick. The individual black box has 34cm height, 18cm width and 16.5cm thick. Skall has six bottle designs in four special editions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Package design of a future Mezcal brand. Create a brand that stands out among the other existing brands and changes the vision of the ordinary bottle to an attractive new design that appeals the eye of the outsiders, leaving the essence of Mexico. The package design is derived from the Aztec culture illustrating its mysterious origin and joining it with the memory of Mezcal's taste, and value. The synergy of these two concepts forms both an exclusive and contemporary design for Skall Mezcal.

CHALLENGE:
One of the challenges for this project was the manufacturing of each piece of Skall, since it was a thesis project the manufacturing number was very scarce and impossible to produce in factories. Each piece was made by hand and with the help of small machinery. The bottles were made in Mexico and then sent to China. Another challenge that made this project grow was the creation of the illustrations, the idea was to create a new style but at the same time, keeping intact the essence of each Aztec God.

PROFILE:
Skall Mezcal is a Mexican handcrafted Mezcal brand prototype, created by the Mexican designer Melissa Xiao Xue Han Ruiz in 2017. The brand is especially focused on the most famous alcoholic beverage produced in Oaxaca, Mexico. The main goal of Skall Mezcal is to inspire and attract more consumers to know the beautiful and mysterious history of the Aztec culture and their god's background, also to change and enlarge the perspective of the traditional Mezcal package. Otherwise, Skall Mezcal aims to highlight the difference between Tequila and Mezcal. The Brand line consists of Mezcals named 'Quetzalcoatl Gold', 'Mictlanteculti Silver', Tezcatlipoca Bronze', 'Xolotl metal' and 'Tlaloc metal'. Apart from mezcal, The brand also has a line of Agave sweet syrup, made from the Maguey plant and spices as a secret ingredient for sweet cocktails.
