DESIGN NAME: Teleport
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sound Art Installation
INSPIRATION: Why do we travel? Sense of freedom by running away from repeatable daily routines and thrill by unfamiliar space or situation make people happy. Teleport, suggesting a solution to space-time limitation of ‘trip’, lets you go on holiday in your very ordinary day.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We designed Teleport to produce a spatial-sound-trip to people with collected sound identities from travel wishlist spots. The tunnel, differs from simple flat sound of earphones, provides three-dimensional sound so that each listener can fall into his or her own imaginations. Straight, twisted, and knotted design of pipes mean connection of teleport. Classic bell shaped design is to make people think of its use at first sight.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Listening to the bells, you will find out that each bell contains its own sound source. Let’s say <Carnival of Venice> for example. Sound of water run from the small bells, song of gondola boatman out of the medium ones, and colorful water parade resounds through the large ones. Likewise, you can teleport to Christmas season of New York City surrounded by the sound of Christmas-themed street performances, carol songs, car horns, and sirens.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Involved in CJ ENM, South Korean top entertainment company, we are willingly planning to build the installation at upcoming KCON conventions, one of the company’s global projects.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Diverse combination of sound outputs can be produced depend on where the listener stands at. You can experience dramatic liveness especially when you walk around the tunnel, sound coming in all different distances following your movement. Moreover, by performing wave lines to the sound in and out of bells, the experience could be an aural as well as a visual delight.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The reason we choose hearing among five senses is we thought it is the best organ for maximizing one’s imagery. We collected papers and research about the relationship between auditory system and imagination in the planning stage, and the arrangement of the bells are based on surround sound system advisories from audio experts in Korea.
CHALLENGE: It was difficult for us to narrow the range of theme, since we wanted to apply so many concepts to this idea. We think, with Teleport, it is possible to travel into masterpieces like Titanic or replay historical events such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Interactive installations were also discussed, however, the range got fixed since we all agree that traveling worldwide is the most sympathizable subject to everyone.
